L'affrancamento del cristiano dalla legge

1 O ignorate forse, fratelli (poiché parlo a persone che hanno conoscenza della legge), che la legge ha potere sull'uomo per tutto il tempo che egli vive?2 Infatti la donna sposata è legata per legge al marito mentre egli vive; ma se il marito muore, è sciolta dalla legge che la lega al marito.3 Perciò, se lei diventa moglie di un altro uomo mentre il marito vive, sarà chiamata adultera; ma se il marito muore, ella è libera da quella legge; così non è adultera se diventa moglie di un altro uomo.4 Così, fratelli miei, anche voi siete stati messi a morte quanto alla legge mediante il corpo di Cristo, per appartenere a un altro, cioè a colui che è risuscitato dai morti, affinché portiamo frutto a Dio.5 Infatti, mentre eravamo nella carne, le passioni peccaminose, risvegliate dalla legge, agivano nelle nostre membra allo scopo di portare frutto per la morte;

6 ma ora siamo stati sciolti dai legami della legge, essendo morti a quella che ci teneva soggetti, per servire nel nuovo regime dello Spirito e non in quello vecchio della lettera.

Il ruolo della legge

7 Che cosa diremo dunque? La legge è peccato? No di certo! Anzi, io non avrei conosciuto il peccato se non per mezzo della legge; poiché non avrei conosciuto la concupiscenza, se la legge non avesse detto:«Non concupire t».8 Ma il peccato, còlta l'occasione per mezzo del comandamento, produsse in me ogni concupiscenza; perché senza la legge il peccato è morto.9 Un tempo io vivevo senza legge; ma, venuto il comandamento, il peccato prese vita e io morii;10 e il comandamento, che avrebbe dovuto darmi vita, risultò che mi condannava a morte.11 Perché il peccato, còlta l'occasione per mezzo del comandamento, mi trasse in inganno e, per mezzo di esso, mi uccise.12 Così la legge è santa, e il comandamento è santo, giusto e buono.

13 Ciò che è buono tdiventò dunque per me morte? No di certo! È invece il peccato che mi è diventato morte, perché si rivelasse come peccato, causandomi la morte mediante ciò che è buono; affinché, per mezzo del comandamento, il peccato diventasse estremamente peccante.

La legge del peccato

14 Sappiamo infatti che la legge è spirituale; ma io sono carnale, venduto schiavo al peccato.15 Poiché ciò che faccio io non lo capisco: infatti non faccio quello che voglio, ma faccio quello che odio.16 Ora, se faccio quello che non voglio, ammetto che la legge è buona;17 allora non sono più io che lo faccio, ma è il peccato che abita in me.18 Difatti io so che in me, cioè nella mia carne, non abita alcun bene; poiché in me si trova il volere, ma il modo di compiere il bene, no.19 Infatti il bene che voglio, non lo faccio; ma il male che non voglio, quello faccio.20 Ora, se io faccio ciò che non voglio, non sono più io che lo compio, ma è il peccato che abita in me.21 Mitrovo dunque sotto questa legge: quando voglio fare il bene, il male si trova in me.22 Infatti io mi compiaccio della legge di Dio, secondo l'uomo interiore,23 ma vedo un'altra legge nelle mie membra, che combatte contro la legge della mia mente e mi rende prigioniero della legge del peccato che è nelle mie membra.24 Me infelice! Chi mi libererà da questo corpo di morte?

25 Grazie siano rese a Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore. Così, dunque, io con la mente servo la legge di Dio, ma con la carne la legge del peccato.

An Example from Marriage

1 My friends, you surely understand enough about law to know that laws only have power over people who are alive. 2 For example, the Law says that a man's wife must remain his wife as long as he lives. But once her husband is dead, she is free

3 to marry someone else. However, if she goes off with another man while her husband is still alive, she is said to be unfaithful.
4 That is how it is with you, my friends. You are now part of the body of Christ and are dead to the power of the Law. You are free to belong to Christ, who was raised to life so we could serve God. 5 When we thought only of ourselves, the Law made us have sinful desires. It made every part of our bodies into slaves who are doomed to die.

6 But the Law no longer rules over us. We are like dead people, and it cannot have any power over us. Now we can serve God in a new way by obeying his Spirit, and not in the old way by obeying the written Law.

The Battle with Sin

8 It was sin that used this command as a way of making me have all kinds of desires. But without the Law, sin is dead.
9 Before I knew about the Law, I was alive. But as soon as I heard that command, sin came to life, 10 and I died. The very command that was supposed to bring life to me, instead brought death. 11 t Sin used this command to trick me, and because of it I died.

12 Still, the Law and its commands are holy and correct and good.
13 Am I saying something good caused my death? Certainly not! It was sin that killed me by using something good. Now we can see how terrible and evil sin really is. 14 We know that the Law is spiritual. But I am merely a human, and I have been sold as a slave to sin. 15 t In fact, I don't understand why I act the way I do. I don't do what I know is right. I do the things I hate. 16 Although I don't do what I know is right, I agree that the Law is good.

17 So I am not the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
18 I know that my selfish desires won't let me do anything that is good. Even when I want to do right, I cannot. 19 Instead of doing what I know is right, I do wrong.

20 And so, if I don't do what I know is right, I am no longer the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
21 The Law has shown me that something in me keeps me from doing what I know is right. 22 With my whole heart I agree with the Law of God. 23 But in every part of me I discover something fighting against my mind, and it makes me a prisoner of sin that controls everything I do. 24 What a miserable person I am. Who will rescue me from this body that is doomed to die?

25 Thank God! Jesus Christ will rescue me.
So with my mind I serve the Law of God, although my selfish desires make me serve the law of sin.
