Creștinul – mort față de Lege, înnoit prin Duhul

1 Oare nu știți, fraților, – căci eu le vorbesc unora care cunosc Legea –, că Legea domnește peste un om atâta timp cât trăiește el?2 O femeie măritată este legată prin Lege de soțul ei, atâta timp cât acesta trăiește, însă dacă soțul ei moare, ea este dezlegată de Lege în ce privește legătura cu soțul ei .3 Deci, dacă ea trăiește cu un alt bărbat câtă vreme soțul ei este în viață, se va numi adulterină, însă dacă soțul ei moare, ea este liberă față de Lege și nu se va numi adulterină dacă se mărită cu un alt bărbat.4 Tot astfel și voi, frații mei, ați murit față de Lege, prin trupul lui Cristos, ca să fiți ai Altuia, ai Celui Ce a fost înviat din morți, ca să aducem rod pentru Dumnezeu.5 Căci, în timp ce trăiam potrivit firiit, patimile păcatelor stârnite de Lege erau la lucru în mădularele noastre, aducând roade pentru moarte.6 Dar acum am fost eliberați de Leget, murind față de ceea ce ne ținea captivi, astfel încât să putem sluji în noutatea Duhului, și nu după vechea literăt.

Legea și păcatul

7 Ce vom spune atunci? Este Legea păcat? În nici un caz! Totuși eu n-aș fi cunoscut păcatul decât prin Lege, pentru că n-aș fi știut ce înseamnă să poftești, dacă Legea nu mi-ar fi spus: „Să nu poftești!“t8 Dar păcatul, prinzând un prilej prin poruncă, a produs în mine tot felul de pofte, pentru că, fără Lege, păcatul este mort.9 Odinioară, fără Lege, eram viu, însă, când a venit porunca, păcatul a prins viață,10 iar eu am murit. Astfel, porunca, cea care era pentru viață, s-a dovedit a fi una care mi-a adus moartea.11 Căci păcatul, prinzând prilejul prin poruncă, m-a înșelat și, prin ea, m-a omorât.12 Prin urmare, Legea, într-adevăr, este sfântă, iar porunca este sfântă, dreaptă și bună.

13 Atunci ceea ce este bun mi-a adus moarte? În nici un caz, ci păcatul a lucrat moartea în mine prin ceea ce este bun, pentru ca el să poată fi arătat ca păcat și, prin poruncă, să devină păcătos peste măsură.14 Noi știm că Legea este duhovnicească, însă eu sunt firesct, vândut ca sclav păcatuluit.15 Căci nu înțeleg ceea ce fac, întrucât nu fac ceea ce vreau, ci fac ceea ce urăsc!16 Acum, dacă eu fac ceea ce nu vreau, sunt de acord că Legea este bună.17 Prin urmare, nu mai sunt eu cel ce face lucrul acesta, ci păcatul care locuiește în mine.18 Eu știu că nimic bun nu locuiește în mine, adică în firea mea, întrucât vreau să fac ceea ce este bine, dar nu pot!19 Căci nu fac binele pe care-l vreau, ci răul pe care nu vreau să-l fac!20 Dacă eu fac ceea ce nu vreau, atunci nu eu sunt cel care fac, ci păcatul care locuiește în mine.21 Astfel, eu găsesc această lege: când vreau să fac binele, răul este prezent.22 Fiindcă, în omul lăuntric mă bucur de Legea lui Dumnezeu,23 dar în mădularele mele văd o altă lege, care este împotriva legii din mintea mea, făcându-mă prizonier al legii păcatului, care este în mădularele mele.24 Ce om nenorocit sunt! Cine mă va elibera din acest trup de moarte?!25 Dar mulțumiri fie aduse lui Dumnezeu, prin Isus Cristos, Domnul nostru! Astfel, cu mintea mea sunt sclav al Legii lui Dumnezeu, dar cu firea mea sunt sclav al legii păcatului.

An Example from Marriage

1 My friends, you surely understand enough about law to know that laws only have power over people who are alive. 2 For example, the Law says that a man's wife must remain his wife as long as he lives. But once her husband is dead, she is free

3 to marry someone else. However, if she goes off with another man while her husband is still alive, she is said to be unfaithful.
4 That is how it is with you, my friends. You are now part of the body of Christ and are dead to the power of the Law. You are free to belong to Christ, who was raised to life so we could serve God. 5 When we thought only of ourselves, the Law made us have sinful desires. It made every part of our bodies into slaves who are doomed to die.

6 But the Law no longer rules over us. We are like dead people, and it cannot have any power over us. Now we can serve God in a new way by obeying his Spirit, and not in the old way by obeying the written Law.

The Battle with Sin

8 It was sin that used this command as a way of making me have all kinds of desires. But without the Law, sin is dead.
9 Before I knew about the Law, I was alive. But as soon as I heard that command, sin came to life, 10 and I died. The very command that was supposed to bring life to me, instead brought death. 11 t Sin used this command to trick me, and because of it I died.

12 Still, the Law and its commands are holy and correct and good.
13 Am I saying something good caused my death? Certainly not! It was sin that killed me by using something good. Now we can see how terrible and evil sin really is. 14 We know that the Law is spiritual. But I am merely a human, and I have been sold as a slave to sin. 15 t In fact, I don't understand why I act the way I do. I don't do what I know is right. I do the things I hate. 16 Although I don't do what I know is right, I agree that the Law is good.

17 So I am not the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
18 I know that my selfish desires won't let me do anything that is good. Even when I want to do right, I cannot. 19 Instead of doing what I know is right, I do wrong.

20 And so, if I don't do what I know is right, I am no longer the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
21 The Law has shown me that something in me keeps me from doing what I know is right. 22 With my whole heart I agree with the Law of God. 23 But in every part of me I discover something fighting against my mind, and it makes me a prisoner of sin that controls everything I do. 24 What a miserable person I am. Who will rescue me from this body that is doomed to die?

25 Thank God! Jesus Christ will rescue me.
So with my mind I serve the Law of God, although my selfish desires make me serve the law of sin.
