로마서 7

혼인 관계로 비유한 율법

1  t형제자매 여러분, 나는 율법을 아는 사람들에게 말을 합니다. 율법은, 사람이 살아 있는 동안에만 그 사람을 지배한다는 것을 알지 못합니까? 2 결혼한 여자는, 그 남편이 살아 있는 동안에는 법으로 남편에게 매여 있으나, 남편이 죽으면 남편의 법에서 풀려납니다. 3 그러므로 남편이 살아 있는 동안에 그 여자가 다른 남자에게로 가면, 그 여자는 간음한 여자라는 말을 듣게 됩니다. 그러나 남편이 죽으면 그 법에서 해방되는 것이므로, 다른 남자에게로 갈지라도 간음한 여자가 되지 않습니다. 4 나의 t형제자매 여러분, 그러므로 여러분도 그리스도의 몸으로 말미암아, 율법에 대해서는 죽임을 당했습니다. 그래서 여러분은 다른 분, 곧 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아나신 그분에게 속하게 되었습니다. 그것은 우리가 하나님을 위하여 열매를 맺게 하기 위함입니다. 5 이전에 우리가 육신을 따라 살 때에는, 율법으로 말미암아 일어나는 죄의 욕정이 우리 몸의 지체 안에서 작용해서, 죽음에 이르는 열매를 맺었습니다. 6 그러나 지금은, 우리를 옭아맸던 것에 대하여 죽어서, 율법에서 풀려났습니다. 그래서 우리는 문자에 얽매인 낡은 정신으로 하나님을 섬기지 않고, 성령이 주시는 새 정신으로 하나님을 섬깁니다.

율법과 죄의 관계

7 그러면 우리가 무엇이라고 말을 하겠습니까? 율법이 죄입니까? 그럴 수 없습니다. 그러나 율법에 비추어 보지 않았다면, t나는 죄가 무엇인지 알지 못하였을 것입니다. 율법에 t“탐 내지 말아라” 하지 않았다면, t나는 탐심이 무엇인지를 알지 못하였을 것입니다. 8 그러나 죄는 이 계명을 통하여 틈을 타서, 내 속에서 온갖 탐욕을 일으켰습니다. 율법이 없으면 죄는 죽은 것입니다. 9 전에는 율법이 없어서 내가 살아 있었는데, 계명이 들어오니까 죄는 살아나고, 10 나는 죽었습니다. 그래서 나를 생명으로 인도해야 할 그 계명이, 도리어 나를 죽음으로 인도한다는 것이 드러났습니다. 11 죄가 그 계명을 통하여 틈을 타서 나를 속이고, 또 그 계명으로 나를 죽였습니다. 12 그러므로 율법은 거룩하며, 계명도 거룩하고 의롭고 선한 것입니다. 13 그러니 그 선한 것이 나에게 죽음을 안겨 주었다는 말입니까? 그럴 수 없습니다. 그러나 죄를 죄로 드러나게 하려고, 죄가 그 선한 것을 방편으로 하여 나에게 죽음을 일으켰습니다. 그것은 계명을 방편으로 하여 죄를 극도로 죄답게 되게 하려는 것이었습니다. 14 우리는 율법이 신령한 것인 줄 압니다. 그러나 나는 육정에 매인 존재로서, 죄 아래에 팔린 몸입니다. 15 나는 내가 하는 일을 도무지 알 수가 없습니다. 내가 해야겠다고 생각하는 일은 하지 않고, 도리어 해서는 안 되겠다고 생각하는 일을 하고 있으니 말입니다. 16 내가 그런 일을 하면서도 그것을 해서는 안 되겠다고 생각하는 것은, 곧 율법이 선하다는 사실에 동의하는 것입니다. 17 그렇다면, 그와 같은 일을 하는 것은 내가 아니라, 내 속에 자리를 잡고 있는 죄입니다. 18 나는 내 속에 곧 내 육신 속에 선한 것이 깃들여 있지 않다는 것을 압니다. 나는 선을 행하려는 의지는 있으나, 그것을 실행하지는 않으니 말입니다. 19 나는 내가 원하는 선한 일은 하지 않고, 도리어 원하지 않는 악한 일을 합니다. 20 내가 해서는 안 되는 것을 하면, 그것을 하는 것은 내가 아니라, 내 속에 자리를 잡고 있는 죄입니다. 21 여기에서 나는 법칙 하나를 발견하였습니다. 곧 나는 선을 행하려고 하는데, 그러한 나에게 악이 붙어 있다는 것입니다. 22 나는 속사람으로는 하나님의 법을 즐거워하나, 23 내 지체에는 다른 법이 있어서 내 마음의 법과 맞서서 싸우며, 내 지체에 있는 죄의 법에 나를 포로로 만드는 것을 봅니다. 24 아, 나는 비참한 사람입니다. 누가 이 죽음의 몸에서 나를 건져 주겠습니까? 25 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통하여 나를 건져 주신 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 그러니 나 자신은, 마음으로는 하나님의 법을 섬기고, 육신으로는 죄의 법을 섬기고 있습니다.

An Example from Marriage

1 My friends, you surely understand enough about law to know that laws only have power over people who are alive. 2 For example, the Law says that a man's wife must remain his wife as long as he lives. But once her husband is dead, she is free

3 to marry someone else. However, if she goes off with another man while her husband is still alive, she is said to be unfaithful.
4 That is how it is with you, my friends. You are now part of the body of Christ and are dead to the power of the Law. You are free to belong to Christ, who was raised to life so we could serve God. 5 When we thought only of ourselves, the Law made us have sinful desires. It made every part of our bodies into slaves who are doomed to die.

6 But the Law no longer rules over us. We are like dead people, and it cannot have any power over us. Now we can serve God in a new way by obeying his Spirit, and not in the old way by obeying the written Law.

The Battle with Sin

7  t Does this mean that the Law is sinful? Certainly not! But if it had not been for the Law, I would not have known what sin is really like. For example, I would not have known what it means to want something that belongs to someone else, unless the Law had told me not to do this.

8 It was sin that used this command as a way of making me have all kinds of desires. But without the Law, sin is dead.
9 Before I knew about the Law, I was alive. But as soon as I heard that command, sin came to life, 10 and I died. The very command that was supposed to bring life to me, instead brought death. 11 t Sin used this command to trick me, and because of it I died.

12 Still, the Law and its commands are holy and correct and good.
13 Am I saying something good caused my death? Certainly not! It was sin that killed me by using something good. Now we can see how terrible and evil sin really is. 14 We know that the Law is spiritual. But I am merely a human, and I have been sold as a slave to sin. 15 t In fact, I don't understand why I act the way I do. I don't do what I know is right. I do the things I hate. 16 Although I don't do what I know is right, I agree that the Law is good.

17 So I am not the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
18 I know that my selfish desires won't let me do anything that is good. Even when I want to do right, I cannot. 19 Instead of doing what I know is right, I do wrong.

20 And so, if I don't do what I know is right, I am no longer the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
21 The Law has shown me that something in me keeps me from doing what I know is right. 22 With my whole heart I agree with the Law of God. 23 But in every part of me I discover something fighting against my mind, and it makes me a prisoner of sin that controls everything I do. 24 What a miserable person I am. Who will rescue me from this body that is doomed to die?

25 Thank God! Jesus Christ will rescue me.
So with my mind I serve the Law of God, although my selfish desires make me serve the law of sin.
