ยกเรื่องการแต่งงานมาเป็นข้อเปรียบเทียบ
1 พี่น้องทั้งหลาย ท่านไม่รู้หรือ (ข้าพเจ้าพูดกับคนที่รู้ธรรมบัญญัติแล้ว) ว่าธรรมบัญญัตินั้นมีอำนาจเหนือบุคคลก็เฉพาะในขณะที่เขายังมีชีวิตอยู่เท่านั้น? 2 เหมือนสตรีที่แต่งงานแล้วต้องอยู่ในกฎประเพณีการสมรสตราบที่สามียังมีชีวิตอยู่ แต่ถ้าสามีถึงแก่กรรม นางก็พ้นจากกฎนั้น 3 ฉะนั้น ถ้าหญิงนั้นไปเป็นของชายอื่นในเมื่อสามียังมีชีวิตอยู่ นางก็ได้ชื่อว่าเป็นหญิงล่วงประเวณี แต่ถ้าสามีตายแล้ว นางก็พ้นจากกฎประเพณีการสมรส แม้จะไปเป็นของชายอื่นก็ไม่ผิดประเวณี
4 เช่นนั้นแหละ พี่น้องทั้งหลาย ท่านได้ตายจากธรรมบัญญัติทางพระกายของพระคริสต์ เพื่อท่านจะเป็นของผู้อื่น คือของพระองค์ผู้ที่พระเจ้าทรงให้เป็นขึ้นมาจากตายแล้ว เพื่อเราจะได้เกิดผลถวายแด่พระเจ้า 5 เมื่อเราดำเนินชีวิตในเนื้อหนัง ตัณหาชั่วที่ธรรมบัญญัติเร้าให้เกิดขึ้นนั้น ได้ทำให้อวัยวะของเราก่อผลซึ่งนำไปสู่ความตาย 6 แต่เดี๋ยวนี้เราได้พ้นจากธรรมบัญญัติ คือได้ตายจากธรรมบัญญัติที่เคยผูกมัดเราไว้ เพื่อจะได้เป็นทาสแบบใหม่ตามพระวิญญาณ ไม่ใช่แบบเก่าตามตัวอักษร
ปัญหาเรื่องบาปที่ฝังอยู่ในตัว
7 ถ้าอย่างนั้นเราจะว่าอย่างไร? จะว่าธรรมบัญญัติคือบาปหรือ? เปล่าเลย แต่ว่าถ้าไม่มีธรรมบัญญัติแล้ว ข้าพเจ้าก็คงไม่รู้จักบาป เพราะว่าถ้าธรรมบัญญัติไม่ได้ห้ามว่า “ห้ามโลภ”t ข้าพเจ้าก็คงไม่รู้ว่าอะไรคือความโลภ 8 แต่ว่าบาปได้ฉวยโอกาสใช้ข้อบัญญัตินั้น ทำให้ความโลภทุกอย่างเกิดขึ้นในตัวข้าพเจ้า เพราะว่าถ้าไม่มีธรรมบัญญัติ บาปเป็นสิ่งที่ตายแล้ว 9 เมื่อก่อนข้าพเจ้าดำรงชีวิตอยู่นอกเหนือธรรมบัญญัติ แต่เมื่อบัญญัตินั้นมา บาปก็กลับมีชีวิต 10 และข้าพเจ้าก็ตาย บัญญัติซึ่งมีไว้เพื่อชีวิต ข้าพเจ้าพบว่านำไปสู่ความตาย 11 เพราะว่าบาปได้ฉวยโอกาสใช้บัญญัตินั้นล่อลวงt และประหารข้าพเจ้าให้ตาย 12 เพราะฉะนั้น ธรรมบัญญัติจึงเป็นสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ และบัญญัตินั้นก็ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ยุติธรรมและดีงาม
13 ถ้าเช่นนั้น สิ่งที่ดีกลับทำให้ข้าพเจ้าต้องตายหรือ? เปล่าเลย บาปต่างหาก คือบาปซึ่งอาศัยสิ่งที่ดีนั้นทำให้ข้าพเจ้าต้องตาย เพื่อจะให้ปรากฏว่าบาปนั้นเป็นบาปจริง และโดยอาศัยพระบัญญัตินั้น บาปก็ปรากฏว่าชั่วร้ายยิ่งนัก 14 เรารู้ว่าธรรมบัญญัตินั้นเป็นเรื่องฝ่ายจิตวิญญาณ แต่ว่าข้าพเจ้าเป็นเนื้อหนังถูกขายเป็นทาสให้อยู่ใต้บาป 15 ข้าพเจ้าไม่เข้าใจการกระทำของข้าพเจ้าเอง เพราะว่าข้าพเจ้าไม่ทำสิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าปรารถนาที่จะทำ แต่กลับทำสิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าเกลียดชังนั้นt 16 ถ้าข้าพเจ้าทำสิ่งที่ไม่ปรารถนาจะทำ ขณะที่ยอมรับว่าธรรมบัญญัตินั้นดี 17 ข้าพเจ้าจึงไม่ใช่ผู้ทำ แต่ว่าบาปซึ่งอยู่ในตัวข้าพเจ้านั่นเองเป็นผู้ทำ 18 ด้วยว่าในตัวข้าพเจ้า คือในเนื้อหนังของข้าพเจ้าไม่มีความดีใดอยู่เลย เพราะว่าเจตนาดีข้าพเจ้าก็มีอยู่ แต่การดีนั้นไม่สามารถทำได้เลย 19 คือว่าการดีนั้นซึ่งข้าพเจ้าปรารถนาทำ ก็ไม่ได้ทำ แต่การชั่วซึ่งข้าพเจ้าไม่ปรารถนาทำ ก็ยังทำอยู่ 20 ถ้าแม้ข้าพเจ้ายังทำสิ่งซึ่งไม่ปรารถนาจะทำ ก็ไม่ใช่ตัวข้าพเจ้าเป็นผู้ทำ แต่บาปซึ่งอยู่ในตัวข้าพเจ้านั่นเองเป็นผู้ทำ
21 ดังนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงพบว่ามีกฎธรรมดาอย่างหนึ่ง คือเมื่อไรที่ข้าพเจ้าตั้งใจจะทำความดี ก็มักจะเลือกทำชั่วซึ่งอยู่ใกล้ตัวt 22 เพราะว่าส่วนลึกในใจของข้าพเจ้านั้น ก็ชื่นชมในธรรมบัญญัติของพระเจ้า 23 แต่ข้าพเจ้าเห็นมีกฎอีกอย่างหนึ่งอยู่ในอวัยวะของข้าพเจ้า ซึ่งต่อสู้กับกฎแห่งจิตใจของข้าพเจ้า และชักนำให้อยู่ใต้บังคับกฎแห่งบาป ซึ่งอยู่ในอวัยวะของข้าพเจ้า 24 โอย ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนน่าสมเพชอะไรเช่นนี้? ใครจะช่วยให้พ้นจากร่างกายแห่งความตายนี้ 25 ขอบพระคุณพระเจ้า โดยทางพระเยซูคริสต์องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าของเรา ฉะนั้นทางด้านจิตใจข้าพเจ้ารับใช้ธรรมบัญญัติของพระเจ้า แต่ทางฝ่ายเนื้อหนังข้าพเจ้ารับใช้กฎแห่งบาป

An Example from Marriage
1 My friends, you surely understand enough about law to know that laws only have power over people who are alive. 2 For example, the Law says that a man's wife must remain his wife as long as he lives. But once her husband is dead, she is free
3 to marry someone else. However, if she goes off with another man while her husband is still alive, she is said to be unfaithful.
4 That is how it is with you, my friends. You are now part of the body of Christ and are dead to the power of the Law. You are free to belong to Christ, who was raised to life so we could serve God. 5 When we thought only of ourselves, the Law made us have sinful desires. It made every part of our bodies into slaves who are doomed to die.
6 But the Law no longer rules over us. We are like dead people, and it cannot have any power over us. Now we can serve God in a new way by obeying his Spirit, and not in the old way by obeying the written Law.The Battle with Sin
7 t Does this mean that the Law is sinful? Certainly not! But if it had not been for the Law, I would not have known what sin is really like. For example, I would not have known what it means to want something that belongs to someone else, unless the Law had told me not to do this.
8 It was sin that used this command as a way of making me have all kinds of desires. But without the Law, sin is dead.
9 Before I knew about the Law, I was alive. But as soon as I heard that command, sin came to life, 10 and I died. The very command that was supposed to bring life to me, instead brought death. 11 t Sin used this command to trick me, and because of it I died.
12 Still, the Law and its commands are holy and correct and good.
13 Am I saying something good caused my death? Certainly not! It was sin that killed me by using something good. Now we can see how terrible and evil sin really is. 14 We know that the Law is spiritual. But I am merely a human, and I have been sold as a slave to sin. 15 t In fact, I don't understand why I act the way I do. I don't do what I know is right. I do the things I hate. 16 Although I don't do what I know is right, I agree that the Law is good.
17 So I am not the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
18 I know that my selfish desires won't let me do anything that is good. Even when I want to do right, I cannot. 19 Instead of doing what I know is right, I do wrong.
20 And so, if I don't do what I know is right, I am no longer the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
21 The Law has shown me that something in me keeps me from doing what I know is right. 22 With my whole heart I agree with the Law of God. 23 But in every part of me I discover something fighting against my mind, and it makes me a prisoner of sin that controls everything I do. 24 What a miserable person I am. Who will rescue me from this body that is doomed to die?
25 Thank God! Jesus Christ will rescue me.
So with my mind I serve the Law of God, although my selfish desires make me serve the law of sin.
