O casamento como exemplo

1 Irmãos, todos vocês entendem a lei de Moisés e, com certeza, sabem que a lei governa a pessoa somente enquanto ela está viva.2 Por exemplo, uma mulher deve se manter casada com o seu marido enquanto ele viver. Mas, se ele morrer, ela fica livre para casar com quem quiser.

3 Entretanto, se ela casar com outro homem enquanto o marido está vivo, a lei diz que ela é culpada de adultério. Mas, se o marido morrer, ela fica livre da lei do casamento e assim pode se casar de novo e não comete adultério.
4 Da mesma maneira, meus irmãos, vocês morreram para a leit através do corpo de Jesus Cristo. Agora vocês pertencem àquele que ressuscitou da morte. Nós pertencemos a Cristo, para que possamos ser úteis no serviço de Deus.5 Porque quando vivíamos de acordo com nossa natureza humana, os nossos desejos pecadores foram despertados pela lei. Eles controlavam nossos corpos e assim nos levavam a morrer espiritualmente.

6 No passado, a lei nos mantinha como prisioneiros. Porém agora estamos livres da lei, pois morremos para ela. Nós não servimos mais a Deus pela maneira antiga, por meio da lei escrita. Agora nós servimos a Deus de maneira nova, por meio do Espíritot.

A nossa luta contra o pecado

7 Não quero com isso dizer que a leit e o pecado sejam a mesma coisa. Não, de maneira nenhuma. Mas a lei era a única maneira de eu vir a saber o que é o pecado. Por exemplo, eu nunca saberia do pecado que há em mim se a lei não dissesse: Não cobicet.8 Mas, por intermédio do mandamento, o pecado encontrou um jeito de criar em mim toda a espécie de cobiça. Mas, sem a lei, o pecado não tem poder.9 Eu tinha vida sem a lei, antes de conhecer a lei. Mas, quando o mandamento veio, o pecado começou a viver10 e eu morri espiritualmente. O mandamento era para dar vida, mas me trouxe somente a morte.

11 O pecado encontrou um jeito de me enganar por meio do mandamento. Ele usou o mandamento para me fazer morrer espiritualmente.
12 A leit é santa e o mandamento é santo, reto e bom.

13 Isto quer dizer que aquilo que é bom me conduziu à morte? De maneira nenhuma! O pecado é que usou o que é bom para me conduzir à morte, a fim de que eu pudesse ver como o pecado realmente é. E assim, por meio do mandamento, o pecado se mostrou ainda mais terrível.

O conflito no homem

14 Nós sabemos que a leit é espiritual, mas eu não sou espiritual. O pecado me controla como se eu fosse seu escravo.15 Eu não entendo aquilo que faço, porque não faço as coisas boas que quero fazer. Ao contrário, faço as coisas más que odeio fazer.16 Se faço as coisas más que não quero fazer, concordo que a lei é boa.17 Mas não sou eu que, de fato, faço o mal. É o pecado que vive em mim que o faz.18 Sim, eu sei que nada de bom vive em mim, isto é, naquela parte de mim que é humana e pecadora. Eu quero fazer o que é bom, mas não faço.19 Eu não faço as coisas boas que quero fazer. Ao contrário, faço as coisas más que não quero fazer.

20 E, se faço as coisas más que não quero fazer, já não sou eu quem as faz, mas o pecado que vive em mim.
21 Aprendi então esta regra: Quando quero fazer o bem, o mal está presente em mim.22 No meu ser interior, estou de acordo com a lei de Deus.23 Mas vejo outra lei trabalhando no meu corpo. Ela batalha contra a leit que meu ser interior aprova. Essa outra lei que trabalha no meu corpo é a lei do pecado e ela me faz seu prisioneiro.24 Que homem tão miserável que sou! Quem poderá me salvar deste corpo que me conduz para a morte?

25 Dou graças a Deus por meio de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.
Assim, em minha mente, sou escravo da lei de Deus, mas naquela parte de mim que é humana e pecadora, sou escravo da lei do pecado.

Romans 7

Believers United to Christ

1 Or do you not know, brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives?2 For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband.3 So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man.

4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.5 For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the tSpirit and not in oldness of the letter.

7 What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, "YOU SHALL NOT COVET."8 But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.9 I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died;10 and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;11 for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.12 So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

The Conflict of Two Natures

14 For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good.17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

21 I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good.22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.
