Romans 8

La vie animée par l'Esprit

1 Il n'y a donc maintenant aucune condamnation pour ceux qui sont en Jésus-Christ, [qui ne vivent pas conformément à leur nature propre mais conformément à l'Esprit].2 En effet, la loi de l'Esprit qui donne la vie en Jésus-Christ m'a libéré de la loi du péché et de la mort,3 car ce qui était impossible à la loi parce que la nature humaine la rendait impuissante, Dieu l'a fait: il a condamné le péché dans la nature humaine en envoyant à cause du péché son propre Fils dans une nature semblable à celle de l'homme pécheur.

4 Ainsi, la justice réclamée par la loi est accomplie en nous qui vivons non conformément à notre nature propre mais conformément à l'Esprit.
5 En effet, ceux qui se conforment à leur nature propre se préoccupent des réalités de la nature humaine, tandis que ceux qui se conforment à l'Esprit sont préoccupés par ce qui est de l'Esprit.6 De fait, la nature humaine tend vers la mort, tandis que l'Esprit tend vers la vie et la paix.7 En effet, la nature humaine tend à la révolte contre Dieu, parce qu'elle ne se soumet pas à la loi de Dieu et qu'elle n'en est même pas capable.

8 Or, ceux qui sont animés par leur nature propre ne peuvent pas plaire à Dieu.
9 Quant à vous, vous n'êtes pas animés par votre nature propre mais par l'Esprit, si du moins l'Esprit de Dieu habite en vous. Si quelqu'un n'a pas l'Esprit de Christ, il ne lui appartient pas.10 Et si Christ est en vous, votre corps, il est vrai, est mort à cause du péché, mais votre esprit est vie à cause de la justice.

11 Et si l'Esprit de celui qui a ressuscité Jésus habite en vous, celui qui a ressuscité Christ rendra aussi la vie à votre corps mortel par son Esprit qui habite en vous.
12 Ainsi donc, frères et sœurs, nous avons une dette, mais pas envers notre nature propre pour nous conformer à ses exigences.13 Si vous vivez en vous conformant à votre nature propre, vous allez mourir, mais si par l'Esprit vous faites mourir les manières d'agir du corps, vous vivrez.14 En effet, tous ceux qui sont conduits par l'Esprit de Dieu sont fils de Dieu.15 Et vous n'avez pas reçu un esprit d'esclavage pour être encore dans la crainte, mais vous avez reçu un Esprit d'adoption, par lequel nous crions: «Abba! Père!»16 L'Esprit lui-même rend témoignage à notre esprit que nous sommes enfants de Dieu.

17 Or, si nous sommes enfants, nous sommes aussi héritiers: héritiers de Dieu et cohéritiers de Christ, si toutefois nous souffrons avec lui afin de prendre aussi part à sa gloire.
18 J'estime que les souffrances du moment présent ne sont pas dignes d'être comparées à la gloire qui va être révélée pour nous.19 De fait, la création attend avec un ardent désir la révélation des fils de Dieu.20 En effet, la création a été soumise à l'inconsistance, non de son propre gré, mais à cause de celui qui l'y a soumiset.21 Toutefois, elle a l'espérance d'être elle aussi libérée de l'esclavage de la corruption pour prendre part à la glorieuse liberté des enfants de Dieu.22 Or nous savons que, jusqu'à maintenant, la création tout entière soupire et souffre les douleurs de l'accouchement.23 Et ce n'est pas elle seule qui soupire, mais nous aussi, qui avons pourtant dans l'Esprit un avant-goût de cet avenir, nous soupirons en nous-mêmes en attendant l'adoption, la libération de notre corps.24 En effet, c'est en espérance que nous avons été sauvés. Or l'espérance qu'on voit n'est plus de l'espérance: ce que l'on voit, peut-on l'espérer encore?

25 Mais si nous espérons ce que nous ne voyons pas, nous l'attendons avec persévérance.
26 De même l'Esprit aussi nous vient en aide dans notre faiblesse. En effet, nous ne savons pas ce qu'il convient de demander dans nos prières, mais l'Esprit lui-même intercède [pour nous] par des soupirs que les mots ne peuvent exprimer.

27 Et Dieu qui examine les cœurs sait quelle est la pensée de l'Esprit, parce que c'est en accord avec lui qu'il intercède en faveur des saintst.
28 Du reste, nous savons que tout contribue au bien de ceux qui aiment Dieu, de ceux qui sont appelés conformément à son plan.29 En effet, ceux qu'il a connus d'avance, il les a aussi prédestinés à devenir conformes à l'image de son Fils, afin que celui-ci soit le premier-né d'un grand nombre de frères.

30 Ceux qu'il a prédestinés, il les a aussi appelés; ceux qu'il a appelés, il les a aussi déclarés justes; et ceux qu'il a déclarés justes, il leur a aussi accordé la gloire.
31 Que dirons-nous donc de plus? Si Dieu est pour nous, qui sera contre nous?32 Lui qui n'a pas épargné son propre Fils mais l'a donné pour nous tous, comment ne nous accorderait-il pas aussi tout avec lui?33 Qui accusera ceux que Dieu a choisis? C'est Dieu qui les déclare justes!34 Qui les condamnera? [Jésus-]Christ est mort, bien plus, il est ressuscité, il est à la droite de Dieu et il intercède pour nous!35 Qui nous séparera de l'amour de Christ? Serait-ce la détresse, l'angoisse, la persécution, la faim, le dénuement, le danger ou l'épée?

36 De fait, il est écrit: C'est à cause de toi qu'on nous met à mort à longueur de journée, qu'on nous considère comme des brebis destinées à la boucherie.t
37 Au contraire, dans tout cela nous sommes plus que vainqueurs grâce à celui qui nous a aimés.38 En effet, j'ai l'assurance que ni la mort ni la vie, ni les anges ni les dominations, ni le présent ni l'avenir, ni les puissances,

39 ni la hauteur, ni la profondeur, ni aucune autre créature ne pourra nous séparer de l'amour de Dieu manifesté en Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur.

Romans 8

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus.2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:4 that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.5 For they that are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.6 For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace:7 because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be:8 and they that are in the flesh cannot please God.9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness.11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you.12 So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh:13 for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live.14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.15 For ye received not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.16 The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God:17 and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified with him.18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us-ward.19 For the earnest expectation of the creation waiteth for the revealing of the sons of God.20 For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but by reason of him who subjected it, in hope21 that the creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.23 And not only so, but ourselves also, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for our adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.24 For in hope were we saved: but hope that is seen is not hope: for who hopeth for that which he seeth?25 But if we hope for that which we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.26 And in like manner the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity: for we know not how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered;27 and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.28 And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose.29 For whom he foreknew, he also foreordained to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren:30 and whom he foreordained, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?33 Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth;34 who is he that condemneth? It is Christ Jesus that died, yea rather, that was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?36 Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
