Ruth 3

1 And Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?2 And now is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor.3 Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the threshing-floor, but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest I will do.

6 And she went down unto the threshing-floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law bade her.7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.9 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thy handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.10 And he said, Blessed be thou of Jehovah, my daughter: thou hast showed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou sayest; for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a worthy woman.12 And now it is true that I am a near kinsman; howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.13 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as Jehovah liveth: lie down until the morning.

14 And she lay at his feet until the morning. And she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.15 And he said, Bring the mantle that is upon thee, and hold it; and she held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and he went into the city.16 And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.17 And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said, Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law.18 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall; for the man will not rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

Ruth 3

Naomi Instructs Ruth

1 At that time,t Naomi, her mother-in-law, said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you so you will be secure.t2 Now Boaz, with whose female servants you worked, is our close relative.t Look, tonight he is winnowing barley at the threshing floor.ts3 So bathe yourself,t rub on some perfumed oil,t and get dressed up.st Then go downs to the threshing floor. But don’t let the man know you’re there until he finishes his meal.t4 When he gets ready to go to sleep,t take careful notice of the place where he lies down. Then go, uncover his legs,t and lie downs beside him.t He will tellt you what you should do.”

5 Ruth replied to Naomi,t “I will do everything you have toldt mes to do.”t

Ruth Visits Boaz

6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law had instructed her to do.t7 When Boaz had finished his meal and was feeling satisfied, he lay down to sleep at the far end of the grain heap.t Then Rutht crept up quietly,s uncovered his legs,t and lay down beside him.t8 In the middle of the night he was startledt and turned over.t Nowt he saw a womans lying beside him!t9 He said, “Who are you?”t She replied, “I am Ruth, your servant.t Marry your servant,t for you are a guardian of the family interests.”ts10 He said, “May you be rewardedt by the Lord, my dear!t This act of devotiont is greater than what you did before.ts For you have not sought to marryt one of the young men, whether rich or poor.ts11 Now, my dear, don’t worry!t I intend to do for you everything you propose,t for everyone in the villaget knows that you are a worthy woman.t12 Now yes, it is true thats I am a guardian,t but there is another guardian who is a closer relative than I am.13 Remain here tonight. Then in the morning, if he agrees to marry you,t fine,t let him do so.t But if he does not want to do so, I promise, as surely as the Lord lives, to marry you.t Sleep here until morning.”s14 So she slept beside himst until morning. She woke up while it was still dark.t Boaz thought,t “No one must know that a woman visited the threshing floor.”t15 Then he said, “Hold out the shawlt you are wearingt and grip it tightly.” As she held it tightly, he measured out about sixty poundst of barley into the shawl and put it on her shoulders. Then hes went into town,

16 and she returned to her mother-in-law.
When Ruth returned to her mother-in-law, Naomit asked,t “How did things turn out for you,t my daughter?” Rutht told her about all the man had done for her.s

Ruth Returns to Naomi

17 She said, “He gave me these sixty pounds of barley, for he said to me,s ‘Do not go to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”s

18 Then Naomit said, “Stay put,t my daughter, until you know how the matter turns out. For the man will not rest until he has taken care of the matter today.”
