テトスヘの手紙 1

一

1-4 神様の奴隷であり、イエス・キリストの使者であるパウロから、同じ主を信じる信仰によって、私の真実の息子となった、愛するテトスへ。
どうか、父なる神と救い主キリスト・イエスが、あなたに祝福と平安とを注いでくださいますように。
私は、神様に選ばれた人たちに信仰を与え、真理を教えるために、遣わされた者です。　神様の真理には、信じる人の生活を全く変える力があり、また、永遠のいのちを与える力もあります。　これは、世界が造られる前からの、神様の約束です。　神様は、うそをつくことができないお方です。　それで今、約束どおり、最善の時を選んで、この良い知らせを公表し、それをすべての人に告げ知らせる特権を、私におゆだねになったのです。　こうして私は、救い主である神様によって、この働きに任命されたのです。
5 ところで、あなたをクレテ島に残して来たのは、島の教会を強めるため、思う存分働いてもらいたかったからです。　前もってお願いしておいたように、私の指示どおり、牧師を町ごとに任命してください。　6 牧師として選ぶ人は、正しい生活を送っていて、世間的にも評判のよい人でなければなりません。　すなわち、ちゃんとした結婚をしており、子供も、主を愛するクリスチャンでなければなりません。　かりにも、子供が親に反抗的だとか、乱暴者だとか、とかくのうわさのある人は避けなさい。
7 牧師は神様に仕える者ですから、だれからも非難されない人であるべきです。　高慢な人、短気な人、大酒飲み、けんか好き、金銭欲の強い人に、その資格はありません。　8 心から客をもてなし、善意にあふれ、考え深く、だれにでも公平で、良識ある、きよらかな心の持ち主でなければならないのです。　9 また、教えられた真理にしっかりと立つ、信仰の強い人であることも大切な条件です。　なぜなら、彼らの使命は、人々に真理を教え、反対する者に、その誤りを、はっきり指摘することにあるからです。
10 こう言うのは、真理に従わない人が大ぜいいるからです。　特に、「クリスチャンはみな、ユダヤ人のおきてを守るべきだ」と主張する連中は、その代表的な例だと言えます。　これはまた、なんとばかげた議論でしょう。　彼らは、人の目をくらませて、真理を見いだすのを阻むのです。　11 そんな議論は、直ちにやめさせなさい。　おかげで、すでに何家族かが、神様の恵みから離れてしまいました。　そんなことを教える連中の目当ては、一にも二にも金もうけです。　12 彼らのことを、同じクレテ出身の預言者は、いみじくもこう言いました。　「クレテ人はみな、うそつきで悪いけだもの。　なまけ者で食いしんぼう。」　13 まさにそのとおりです。　ですから、人々を甘やかさず、その信仰を強めるように、びしびし教育しなさい。　14 そして、ユダヤ人の作り話や、真理に逆らう者の言い分に耳を傾けることなど、きっぱりやめさせなさい。
15 きよい心の持ち主には、すべてのものがきよく、良いものに見えます。　しかし、心の曲がった不真実な者には、すべてが曲がって見えるのです。　それは、その汚れた思いと反抗的な心が、見るもの聞くものすべてを、ゆがめるからです。　16 そういう連中は、口先では神様を知っていると言うのですが、行ないを見れば、そのうそは一目瞭然です。　心は腐れきっていて不従順で、何一つ良いことをする資格がありません。

Titus 1

1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before times eternal;3 but in his own seasons manifested his word in the message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour;4 to Titus, my true child after a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge;6 if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly.7 For the bishop must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;8 but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled;9 holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.10 For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision,11 whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons.13 This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,14 not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.15 To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.16 They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
