Tito 1

1 Carta de Pablo, siervo de Dios y apóstol de Jesucristo, enviado por él para que los elegidos de Dios lleguen a la fe y al conocimiento de la verdad que se encuentra en nuestra religión,2 sostenidos por la esperanza de la vida eterna. Dios, que no miente, prometió esta vida desde la eternidad,3 y ahora, a su debido tiempo, ha dado a conocer su mensaje por medio de la predicación que me ha sido confiada por mandato de Dios nuestro Salvador.4 A Tito, verdadero hijo en la fe común a los dos. Que Dios nuestro Padre y Jesucristo nuestro Salvador derramen su gracia y su paz sobre ti.

Con los que presiden la comunidad

5 Cuando te dejé en la isla de Creta, lo hice para que arreglaras lo que quedaba por arreglar y para que, en cada pueblo, nombraras ancianos de la iglesia, de acuerdo con lo que yo te encargué.6 Un anciano debe llevar una vida irreprochable. Debe ser esposo de una sola mujer, y sus hijos deben ser creyentes y no estar acusados de mala conducta o de ser rebeldes.7 Pues el que preside la comunidad está encargado de las cosas de Dios, y por eso es necesario que lleve una vida irreprochable. No debe ser terco, ni de mal genio; no debe ser borracho, ni amigo de peleas, ni desear ganancias mal habidas.8 Al contrario, siempre debe estar dispuesto a hospedar gente en su casa, y debe ser un hombre de bien, de buen juicio, justo, santo y disciplinado.9 Debe apegarse al verdadero mensaje que se le enseñó, para que también pueda animar a otros con la sana enseñanza y convencer a los que contradicen.

Frente a los falsos maestros

10 Porque hay muchos rebeldes, sobre todo entre los que vienen del judaísmo, que dicen cosas sin sentido y engañan a la gente.11 A ésos hay que taparles la boca, pues trastornan familias enteras, enseñando lo que no deben para obtener ganancias mal habidas.12 Fue un profeta de la misma isla de Creta quien dijo de sus paisanos: «Los cretenses, siempre mentirosos, salvajes, glotones y perezosos.»13 Y dijo la verdad; por eso, repréndelos duramente, para que sean sanos en su fe14 y para que no hagan caso de cuentos inventados por los judíos, ni de lo que ordenan los que dan la espalda a la verdad.15 Para los puros todas las cosas son puras; pero para los que son impuros y no aceptan la fe, nada hay puro, pues tienen impuras la mente y la conciencia.16 Dicen conocer a Dios, pero con sus hechos lo niegan; son odiosos y rebeldes, incapaces de ninguna obra buena.

Titus 1

1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before times eternal;3 but in his own seasons manifested his word in the message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour;4 to Titus, my true child after a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge;6 if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly.7 For the bishop must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;8 but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled;9 holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.10 For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision,11 whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons.13 This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,14 not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.15 To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.16 They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
