Saludo
1 Pablo, siervo de Dios y apóstol de Jesucristo, enviado por él para traer a la fe a los que Dios ha escogido, para que conozcan la verdad de nuestra religión, 2 que está basada en la esperanza de la vida eterna. Dios, que no miente,t prometió esta vida desde antes que el mundo existiera; 3 y ahora, a su debido tiempo,t nos ha dado a conocer su mensaje por medio de la predicación que me ha sido confiada por mandato de Dios nuestro Salvador.t
4 A Tito,t verdadero hijo mío en esta fe que los dos tenemos, deseando que Dios nuestro Padre y Cristo Jesús nuestro Salvador derramen su gracia y su paz sobre ti.Responsabilidades de Tito en Creta (1.5–3.14)
Ancianos y obispos
5 Cuando te dejé en la isla de Creta, lo hice para que arreglases lo que quedaba por arreglar, y para que en cada pueblo nombrases ancianos de la iglesia, de acuerdo con lo que te encargué.t 6 El ancianot ha de ser irreprensible,t esposo de una sola mujer.t Sus hijos deben ser creyentes y no estar acusados de mala conducta o de rebeldía. 7 En cuanto al obispo, como administrador de las cosas de Dios, es necesario que lleve una vida recta. No debe ser terco ni de mal genio; no debe ser borracho ni amigo de peleas, ni ha de anhelar ganancias deshonestas. 8 Al contrario, ha de ser hospitalariot y hombre de bien, de buen juicio, justo, consagrado a Dios y disciplinado.
9 Debe apegarse al verdadero mensaje que se le enseñó, para que también pueda animar a otros con la sana enseñanza,t y convencer a los que contradicen.Los falsos maestros
10 Porque, sobre todo entre los que proceden del judaísmo,t hay muchos rebeldes que dicen cosas sin sentido y engañan a la gente.
11 A esos hay que taparles la boca, pues trastornan a familias enteras enseñando lo que no deben, para obtener ganancias deshonestas.
12 Fue un profeta de la misma isla de Creta quien dijo de sus paisanos: “Los cretenses, siempre mentirosos, salvajes, glotones y perezosos.”t 13 Y dijo la verdad. Por eso, repréndelos duramente, para que sean sanos en su fe,
14 para que no hagan caso a cuentos inventados por los judíost ni a lo que ordenan los que dan la espalda a la verdad.t
15 Para quienes tienen la mente limpia todas las cosas son limpias; pero para quienes no creen ni tienen la mente limpia nada es limpio,t pues hasta su mente y su conciencia están sucias. 16 Dicen que conocen a Dios, pero le niegan con sus hechos;t son odiosos y rebeldes, incapaces de ninguna obra buena.
Titus 1
Salutation
1 From Paul,t a slavets of God and apostle of Jesus Christ, to further the faitht of God’s chosen ones and the knowledge of the truth that is in keeping with godliness,2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the ages began.t3 But now in his own timet he has made his message evident through the preaching I was entrusted with according to the command of God our Savior.
4 To Titus, my genuine son in a common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior!
Titus’ Task on Crete
5 The reason I left you in Crete was to set in order the remaining matters and to appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.6 An elder must be blameless,t the husband of one wife,t with faithful childrent who cannot be charged with dissipation or rebellion.7 For the overseers must be blameless as one entrusted with God’s work,t not arrogant, not prone to anger, not a drunkard, not violent, not greedy for gain.8 Instead he must be hospitable, devoted to what is good, sensible, upright, devout, and self-controlled.
9 He must hold firmly to the faithful message as it has been taught,t so that he will be able to give exhortation in such healthy teachingt and correct those who speak against it.
10 For there are manys rebellious people, idle talkers, and deceivers, especially those with Jewish connections,t11 who must be silenced because they mislead whole families by teaching for dishonest gain what ought not to be taught.12 A certain one of them, in fact, one of their own prophets, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”s13 Such testimony is true. For this reason rebuke them sharply that they may be healthy in the faith14 and not pay attention to Jewish mythss and commands of people who reject the truth.15 All is pure to those who are pure. But to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their minds and consciences are corrupted.
16 They profess to know God but with their deeds they deny him, since they are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good deed.
