Tito 1

1 Questa lettera è scritta da Paolo, servo di Dio e apostolo di Gesù Cristo.2 Sono stato incaricato di portare alla fede quelli che Dio ha scelto; sono stato chiamato a far conoscere la verità, che è la base del vero credo, nella speranza della vita eterna che Dio ha promesso fin dai tempi dei tempi. Dio non mente mai,3 ed ora, nel tempo da lui stabilito, ha fatto conoscere a tutti la buona notizia della salvezza per mezzo della predicazione che Dio stesso, nostro Salvatore, mi ha ordinato di fare.4 A te Tito, mio vero figlio nella fede, auguro che Dio Padre e Gesù Cristo, nostro Salvatore, ti diano grazia e pace.

Norme per eleggere i responsabili della Chiesa.

5 Ti ho lasciato a Creta, perché tu finisca di sistemare quanto resta da fare per le chiese locali, e cioè che tu elegga dei responsabili in ogni città, basandoti sulle norme che ti ho raccomandato.6 Quelli che scegli devono godere di buona reputazione, avere una sola moglie, figli credenti, senza fama di essere viziosi o ribelli ai genitori.7 Il responsabile di una chiesa deve essere un uomo irreprensibile, perché è un ministro di Dio. Non deve essere arrogante, né collerico; non dev’essere dedito all’alcool, né violento e neppure avido di guadagni disonesti.8 Al contrario, bisogna che sia ospitale, amante del bene, saggio, giusto, pio e padrone di sé.9 Deve restare fermamente legato alla verità che ha imparato; così sarà capace d’insegnare come si deve e di convincere dei propri errori quelli che s’oppongono alla sana dottrina.10 Infatti molti sono i ribelli, i chiacchieroni e gl’imbroglioni, soprattutto fra quelli che sostengono che i cristiani devono obbedire alle leggi ebraiche.11 Bisogna turare la bocca a chi dice queste assurdità! Costoro, per amore di guadagno disonesto, mettono a soqquadro intere famiglie, insegnando quel che non si deve.12 Uno di questi, proprio un loro profeta di Creta, ha detto una volta: « I Cretesi sono tutti bugiardi, animali indolenti che vivono soltanto per soddisfare lo stomaco ».13 Questo è vero. Per questa ragione rimprovera quei cristiani con la dovuta severità, affinché conservino una fede sana e14 non diano retta alle favole dei Giudei ed agli ordini di quelli che voltano le spalle alla verità.15 Chi è puro di cuore vede bontà e purezza dappertutto; ma chi è corrotto e non ha fede trova il male dappertutto, perché i suoi pensieri sporchi e il suo cuore ribelle sporcano tutto ciò che vede e sente.16 Queste persone dicono di conoscere Dio, ma lo rinnegano con i fatti: sono spregevoli, ribelli e incapaci di qualsiasi opera buona.

Titus 1

1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before times eternal;3 but in his own seasons manifested his word in the message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour;4 to Titus, my true child after a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge;6 if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly.7 For the bishop must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;8 but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled;9 holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.10 For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision,11 whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons.13 This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,14 not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.15 To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.16 They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
