TITUS 1

Paulus skryf aan sy geloofskind Titus en stuur 'n seëngroet

1 Hierdie brief kom van Paulus, 'n dienskneg van God en 'n apostel van Jesus Christus. Ek is gestuur om dié wat God gekies het, tot geloof te lei en om hulle die waarheid te leer wat hulle wys hoe om godvrugtig te lewe.2 Hierdie waarheid gee aan hulle die vooruitsig op die ewige lewe wat God aan hulle beloof het nog voor die wêreld geskep is - en Hy kan nie lieg nie.

3 En nou, op die regte tyd, het Hy hierdie boodskap bekendgemaak, en ons verkondig dit aan almal. Dit is deur die opdrag van God ons Verlosser dat ek vertrou word om hierdie werk vir Hom te doen.

4 Hierdie brief word gerig aan Titus, my ware kind in die geloof wat ons met mekaar deel. Mag die genade en vrede van God die Vader en Christus Jesus ons Verlosser met jou wees.

Advies aan Titus en die gemeente op Kreta

5 Ek het jou op die eiland Kreta agtergelaat om ons werk daar af te rond en om ouderlinge in elke dorp aan te stel soos ek jou beveel het.
6 'n Ouderling moet gerespekteer wees vir sy goeie lewe. Hy moet getrou wees aan sy vrou, en sy kinders moet gelowiges wees wat nie wild of opstandig is nie.7 As bestuurder van God se huishouding moet 'n ouderling 'n onberispelike lewe lei. Hy moenie arrogant of humeurig wees nie; hy moet hom ook nie aan drank vergryp of gewelddadig of geldgierig wees nie.8 Hy moet gasvry wees en alles wat goed is, liefhê. Hy moet met wysheid lewe en regverdig wees. Hy moet 'n toegewyde en gedissiplineerde lewe lei.

9 Hy moet 'n sterk en standvastige geloof hê in die betroubare boodskap wat hy geleer is; dan sal hy in staat wees om ander met die gesonde onderrig te bemoedig en dié wat dit teenstaan, te wys waar hulle verkeerd is.
10 Want daar is baie wat opstandig is teen die regte onderrig; hulle is praatjiesmakers en mislei mense. Dit is veral waar van dié uit die Jodedom.11 Hulle moet tot swye gebring word. Deur hulle verkeerde leer laat hulle hele gesinne van die waarheid afwyk - en dit vir skaamtelose winsbejag.12 Een van hulle eie mense, 'n profeet uit Kreta, het van hulle gesê: "Die Kretensers is almal leuenaars; hulle is wilde diere en lui vrate."13 Dit is waar. Berispe hulle dus so streng moontlik om hulle weer gesond in die geloof te maak.

14 Hulle moet ophou om na Joodse mites en na die opdragte van mense te luister wat hulle rug op die waarheid gedraai het.
15 Enigiets is rein vir dié wie se harte rein is. Maar niks is rein vir hulle wat korrup en ongelowig is nie, want hulle gedagtes en gewetens is besoedel.

16 Sulke mense gee voor dat hulle God ken, maar hulle lewe weerspreek dit. Hulle is verwerplik en rebels, ware deugniete wat tot niks goeds in staat is nie.

TITUS 1

1 From Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ.
I encourage God's own people to have more faith and to understand the truth about religion. 2 Then they will have the hope of eternal life God promised long ago. And God never tells a lie!

3 So, at the proper time, God our Savior gave this message and told me to announce what he had said.

4  t Titus, because of our faith, you are like a son to me. I pray that God our Father and Christ Jesus our Savior will be kind to you and will bless you with peace!

What Titus Was To Do //in Crete

6 t they must have a good reputation and be faithful in marriage.t Their children must be followers of the Lord and not have a reputation for being wild and disobedient.
7 Church officialst are in charge of God's work, and so they must also have a good reputation. They must not be bossy, quick-tempered, heavy drinkers, bullies, or dishonest in business. 8 Instead, they must be friendly to strangers and enjoy doing good things. They must also be sensible, fair, pure, and self-controlled.

9 They must stick to the true message they were taught, so their good teaching can help others and correct everyone who opposes it.
10 There are many who don't respect authority, and they fool others by talking nonsense. This is especially true of some Jewish followers. 11 But you must make them be quiet. They are after money, and they upset whole families by teaching what they should not.

12 It is like one of their own prophets once said,
“The people of Crete
always tell lies.
They are greedy and lazy
like wild animals.”
13 This surely is a true saying. And you should be hard on such people, so you can help them grow stronger in their faith.

14 Don't pay any attention to any of those senseless Jewish stories and human commands. These are made up by people who won't obey the truth.
15 Everything is pure for someone whose heart is pure. But nothing is pure for an unbeliever with a dirty mind. That person's mind and conscience are destroyed. 16 Such people claim to know God, but their actions prove they really don't. They are disgusting. They won't obey God, and they are too worthless to do anything good.
