Notice that David doesn't ask God to overlook his sin. David wanted to be disciplined in love by God rather than in anger. Disciplining in anger doesn't accomplish the higher purpose of discipline - conviction, repentence, and purification. Instead, angry discipline instills despair and hopelessness.
