Discussing this verse with a mixed group of college students -- many of whom were wondering how I would address the issue of drinking alcohol -- I made the point that everyone gets drunk. Some with wine, some with beer, some with relationships, some with internet use, some with pornography, and so forth. Although Paul specifically addresses wine in this passage, the principle extends much further -- including all kinds of addictive substances.

We use all kinds of things to dull our senses, hiding away from reality, instead of turning to God and trusting in Him. What we need to do is "be filled with the Spirit." At all times, we should avoid all kinds of foolishness and pursue the joy and peace that is available only in Christ.

Taking the focus off of wine is important. (I say that because if wine were the primary focus, it would still allow for other kinds of alcoholic beverages.) People get stuck on that and miss the main message of this passage. It isn't a condemning message against those who fill their lives with debauchery. Rather, it is a positive, encouraging message: we need to be filled with the Spirit of life!
