Searching for a Sign
Jesus’ skeptics challenge him to show a sign that proves the miracles he does are of God. They can see what Jesus does, but they doubt that he is from God, even to the point of saying he drives out demons in the name of the Satan (an absurd claim I think).
But, I doubt that few of us, if Jesus were to physically show up in our lives, would find it easy to believe that he was of God either. Yet, instead of showing them a sign to prove his miracles are of God, Jesus says that the only sign they will receive will be the sign of Jonah. It is clear that Jesus is drawing an analogy from the story of Jonah to point to his resurrection and rescue from death. This is the sign he will give, but many among the Jews will still reject this message and the Gentiles will be offered a place in the redemptive plan of God. Jesus says to his doubters that eventually, it will be revealed that He is the Messiah. The sign may not come on their timing, but it will be clear in the end.
Sometimes, when faced with difficult decisions it is not so easy to know which direction, voice or leading is from God and which is not. Sometimes the best thing that we can do is to keep moving with God, as faithfully as we know how, and continue to seek for His way to be revealed. Because, in the end we always find that His way leads to life. If we are seeking Him, we will find Him when we seek with all our hearts.
