Reasoning with God
To me this is once more a facinating picture of Gods willingness to engage in meaningful communication with us (just like he did with Abraham in Genesis 18). Moses is reasoning with God here and convinces him not to destroy Israel. Message version says that as a result of the converstaion God "thought twice" and "decided not to do evel he had threatened...". Wow, does the holy God, almighty God really listen to our thoughts and ideas! Of course, this is Moses we are talking about but I believe that if we are sincere to Him, he is willing to listen. Isn't it comforting and most of all exciting!
We see similar discussion also for example in Exodus 33:12-23.
