On this Palm Sunday, I feel it is fitting to look at this passage. This image of Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey is an extremely political statement. This was not the conquering hero the Jews expected. A hero was often depicted on a white horse, riding into his city. A king, however, would come riding on a donkey. The prophet Zechariah prophesied this hundreds of years before Jesus came to earth (9:9)
When the people are shouting "Hosanna!" they are actually using a Hebrew word that literally means "Save us!" Can you imagine being Jesus, fulfilling this prophecy, proclaiming your kingship, and having your "subjects" screaming out to you, as the Messiah of Israel, "Save us!"? Less than a week later, Jesus will be betrayed, beaten, condemned, denied, and crucified, and some of these same people will be calling for his death.
