Sardes
Sardes was the old capital of Lydia and the residence of the fabulous rich king Croesus (probably differently spelled in English, sorry for that), who had made the first money ever. It was a trading city, it lies on a crosspoint of roads. In this town there were a lot of people that believed in the mysterie religions, like Kybele (also known as Magna Mater - Great Mother). Sardes (Turkish: Sefarad, Perzic: Sparda) means "remnant/rest", a handful of survivors, that escaped something. This can be seen as the history of the town, who has escaped the eastern (long forlorn) civilization.
This part stands for the years 1520-1800. Not exactly or course, but it starts with the many denominations. -- The town has a good name, but it is not covered by her life. The Lord calls her death.. They live more by names and words than deeds and works, which means, that faith has become more a case of head than of heart. It is a form with no content, a learning without living. They are against evil, but do not live like it. --- Sardes is named to be asleep, the opposite of waking to which the Lord calls (Marc 13:33-37).
