mom's request
So here’s what I find interesting about the interchange:
She interceded on behalf of her friend. Running out of wine wasn’t her problem, it was the wedding host’s problem. But she knew her friend had a problem, and she took her friend’s problem to Jesus.
She talked to Jesus about the problem. Jesus was at the wedding, so he obviously knew the the wine had run out. But she didn’t just assume “oh Jesus knows about it anyway, so He’ll do something about it if he wants to.” Instead, she intentionally brought the problem to Jesus.
She knew there was something Jesus could do about the problem, but she didn’t proceed to describe an acceptable course of action for Jesus to take. She simply stated the problem, and trusted that He would determine the appropriate outcome.
Jesus responded to his mother in a way that indicated that he wasn’t inclined to take action. But that didn’t deter her. And she didn’t argue with him. She simply turned to those around her and advised them to follow whatever instruction Jesus gave.
Seems like there’s a good little lesson for me to learn from Jesus’ mom…about recognizing my friend’s problem and interceding on her behalf…trusting that God knows the appropriate course of action and not “instructing” God on how to do his job…leaving my friend’s problem in God’s hands, and advising my friend and those around her to follow Christ’s instructions.
