Mark 5:24-34 ASV

What an incredible incident! It starts by saying “A large crowd followed and pressed around him” (5:24) Why was it important for Mark to mention that they were pressing against Jesus and that it was a lot of them? When we read later on that a woman (of all people) did the same thing except she made something special out of the touch the whole story gets color and it is put in perspective. What a stark contrast! Something happened and only Jesus and this woman knew it. Even the disciples were clueless (see verse 31). The mere presence of Jesus and the physical touch didn’t do the magic but what this woman made of it. Later on in v.34 Jesus told her it is her faith that healed her (not the touch per se).

Verse 28 cracks for us the window into her thinking. Immediately we see her strong conviction. She had not a doubt about what Jesus could do. She knew that she didn’t even have to talk with Him or have a special session. She knew she only needed to come in contact with something that is connected to Jesus and it is sufficient. Wow!!! How powerful her faith in God’s presence was.

God will not force His way in my life though He is very present in every moment there with me. What I do with His presence will determine how much of God I experience, how much of who He is I get to know in an intimate and personal way. I don’t need to ask God to be near, to do something. He is near and very active. I have to ask myself: how much of God do I allow in my life? In Jesus own words: do I have eyes to see and ears to hear? What do “I” do to experience His presence and let Him do what He wants in me? That will make all the difference in the world.
