John 5:27
Christ is given the authority to judge not because He is the means by which all Creation was made, sustained, and redeemed (John 1:3, Hebrews 1:3); not because He is the Son of God; but because He is the Son of Man. That is, Christ is made judge of us all as much (or more so) because of His human character as His divine. As it says in Hebrews 4:15, He has suffered all that we have suffered, been tempted in all the ways we have been tempted, and is personally, experientially familiar with what it means to be human. For all that people complain of God being aloof to, disconnected from, and disinterested with our problems and our pain, I can think of no more empathetic, understanding judge. Indeed, Christ in this role is not only supremely just and merciful; it is also “fair,” which usually has nothing to do with either.
