When things aren't going right, we make promises and bargains - not only with God, but with ourselves and others. If it feels like your whole world is falling appart, you will promise anything. For example, if you find out you have high blood pressure or a heart condition, you will promise yourself and your doctor (in fact - whoever will listen) that you are going to eat right and exercise, really get in shape - do the right thing.

However, once the danger has passed, once things start to get back to "normal" we tend to forget our promises and do what is most convenient for us.

It's easy to look at Pharaoh and condemn him for being wishy-washy, but it seems to me that it is simple human nature.
