Matthew 6:1-6 ASV

While I was in College, I took sociology. In the class we studied a principle called something to the tune of "The Double Mirror Theory" (I can't remember exactly) The theory is an illustration of how people view themselves. It reads something like this "I am not who I think am, but I am who I think You think I am." Read it again slowly. Instead of seeing myself in my own mirror, I try to adapt my reflection to what the person behind me is seeing in their mirror. Jesus is teaching us here, that we shouldn't try to adapt our personality and character to match up to what we think other people think of us. Jesus says don't worry about people think about you. He says to focus on what God thinks about you. The focus will shift from you to God. Then you will "sense his grace". Don't worry about how you look in somebody else's mirror or how you look in your own mirror. Look through your mirror and realize that their is a God on the other side who loves you just the way you are. When we can look at ourselves in the way God looks at us, we are free to be who were made to be, and we no longer have to work to be who we think someone else wants us to be.
