Psalm 49:1-2 ASV, Psalm 49:7 ASV, Psalm 49:10 ASV and Psalm 49:20 ASV

In this Psalm, David ask everyone to listen up. Rich, poor, famous, not famous, jocks, nerds; everyone! We all see that everyone dies. No one can pay the ransom for his own life. Despite riches, fame or "coolness", we do not endure. David is explaining to us the foolishness of self sufficiency. We must constantly remind ourselves that all our blessings, possessions, and even live itself is a gift from our Heavenly Father. The minute we forget that, we begin to act in a way that is not pleasing to God. We must hold our possessions loosely! Remember the story of the "widow's mite". Even though she had very little in the eyes of the world, her heart was a wellspring of wisdom. She knew that she must constantly keep a loose grip on her possessions and trust her Heavenly Father for her needs. Because of her heart she was able to give to God the little that she had. How about us? How is our grip on our "stuff". "But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beast that perish. This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve of their sayings. Selah!
