The import of the Scripture relating specifically to our time is that we must be on guard against a very deep and offensive self-absorbed perspective. Another version says here that people will be lovers of self, lovers of pleasure and money rather than lovers of God. I think the only hope anyone has of not becoming a victim to such a state in these latter days is to become deeply honest with themselves before God and his Word. Being honest with ourselves on the level needed here requires grace from God who really knows and tries man.
