Chris Spradlin opens the second part of the series "Fanatic" at http://www.lifechurch.tv/message-archive/fanatic/2 by talking about how we were made to be worshippers. When he was young, his family brought him every Sunday to worship. They would sing songs like "Amazing Grace","Trust and Obey" and "I'll Fly Away". Although these were great songs, worship was stilted and stoic. It was uncomfortable when someone would show up clapping or when someone would raise their hands. A Samaritan woman approaches Jesus with the same sort of confusion because some were saying that worship should be on a mountain and Jesus was saying it should be in Jerusalem. Jesus responds with John 4:23-24. God seeks two different kinds of people, the spiritually lost and true worshippers. The first attribute of a true worshipper is: 1) Awe - Chris remembers the day he was changed forever when he met a beautiful blonde named Jodi. It's a funny comparison to the awe of God, but the parallel connects. John, one of Jesus' disciples, ended up on an island, received visions of Awe (like Revelation 1:16-17, and eventually wrote the book of Revelation. Awe is what Moses felt when he went before the burning bush. True worshippers worship with 2) Abandonment. David was a worshipper in abandonment when he strips and dances before his people. His act was an embarassment to his wife, who tries to stop him, but he says, "I will celebrate before the Lord." In today's world, it's acceptable to go into a craze kind of worship for singers in concert. Chris was blown away when he say people in absolute abandon at a Miley Cyrus concert. But he thought, "these guys get it! The only problem is their worshipping the wrong person." There are many passages in Psalms that talk about worship. "Dance before him...shout to God...Run to Him....Lift your hands...Clash the symbols...Sing a new song...Make a loud noise.." True worshippers worship 3) with your LIFE. Romans 1:12 says to offer our bodies as living sacrifices. Matthew 20:28 talks about how Jesus' life was a sacrifice. Worship through obedience, through tythes and through service. Let our lives be the true worship 24/7.
