This is one of my favorite passages in the Bible for many reasons. First, it gives me comfort in knowing that as I step out to share my faith with others, I shouldn't be surprised when they reject the message that I bear because it is foolishness to those who are perishing. Second, it make me humble because I do not fully understand the mystery of salvation. As I try to live an outward-focused life to serve God and share his story with others, I am reminded that I am in the process of "being saved." Do I have confidence in my salvation? Yes! Am I working it out with fear and trembling? Yes! So, where is boasting, then? There isn't! Third, this verse tells me that it is ultimately God whose power we are to rely upon. It is not the eloquence of our words, nor the conviction with which we share the Gospel. It is the power of God. So, I find peace knowing that I can do nothing apart from Him who gives me strength, in whom I find Salvation.
