Parenting gone very bad...
Eli vexed God in a major way because he was too busy with his work to raise his two sons to love and respect God. God calls him on his shortcomings saying basically, "I gave your family all this responsibility and the benefits that came with it and you can't be bothered to control your own sons?"
God promised, and then delivered on that promise, to punish Eli's family forever because of Eli's failings as a parent. Eli was just to wrapped up in his ministry outside the home to have a ministry inside the home.
1 Timothy 3 tells us that if we don't model successful leadership inside our home, we cannot expect to successfully lead outside our home. Or as John Maxwell so succinctly puts it in his "Leadership Bible", "if it doesn't work at home, don't export it".
