Psalm 139 / Prayer of Examen
Time spent considering our life and what we have noticed of God at work is time well spent. We do more than see into ourselves more deeply, even though we do that. We see God in our lives and God at work in the world. It leads us to remember the works of our God. We remember God promising to bless the world through his people. We remember God saving his people who would do the blessing by taking them out of slavery and granting them a promised land. We remember God maintaining his relationship through a kingdom that he built and led through David that was only a forshadowing of the kingdom he opened to us in Jesus. We remember Jesus and his life and the life he offers us and his forgiveness and atonement and life with God we now have. But the remembering becomes more personal too. We have seen God at work in our own lives. And we need to remember. Interestingly, when we remember we praise, we hope, we glory in our God. We also become aware of ways in which we missed it. Sometimes we didn't notice God or got distracted by something else. Sometimes we ignored or disobeyed or dishonored him. This is the prayer of Examen. To examen is to weigh out what we see and find truth, find reality. By looking back at our life with our ears open to God's voice is to see clearly. And what do we find? God is here, and we find him even in our lives and even deep within ourselves. And it the process we are moved to cry out, search me, see if there is anything i should notice in me so that everything I am and do and say can be pleasing in your sight and accomplish your will. Glory to God.
