Zephaniah 1:2-13 ASV

This passage begins with a description of a coming judgment which we have not yet seen the likes of. God will "wipe the earth clean". The rest of the passage describes a national judgment promised to Judah, and particularly Jerusalem.

(v.13)The judgment will be quick and unforeseen. People will build houses and plant vineyards, expecting lasting prosperity. They will not live in the houses or harvest the grapes.

(v.10-12) All of Jerusalem will mourn the destruction. No one will be spared.

Why is this judgment coming?

BECAUSE OF IDOLATRY.

(vs.4-5) Baal and Molech are mentioned by name. They are two of the most frequently worshipped false gods throughout the history of god's people. Worship of both is specifically condemned in the law, as is the worship of the stars or the sun or the moon. Zephaniah condemns this practice as well (bowing to the host of the heavens).

Judah's idolatry also extended beyond the literal worship of false gods. Their idolatry included placing their dependence and their loyalty in a place other than God.

(vs.8) They depended on foreign relationships and alliances. ( "all who array themselves in foreign attire")

(vs.9) Many had fallen prey to superstitions, and silly customs designed to protect them from evil spirits. ("everyone who leaps over the threshold")

(vs.9) Not only the rich were at fault. The poor, rather than waiting for God to judge their oppressors, were relying on themselves for justice. ("those who fill their master's house with violence and fraud")

Even those who were not plainly engaging in idolatry were to be punished. God's judgment was also for:

(vs.6) the passive
(vs. 12) the complacent

This passage is not and should not be used as a warning for America. Nor is it necessarily a warning for the church. It is a prophesy for Judah which was fulfilled (albeit not immediately, as Josiah heeded Zephaniah's words and took decisive action [1 Chronicles 34]). I would suggest two applications for us:

1) Beware. The judgment of verses 2-3 is yet to come. It will be infinitely more horrible than the judgment experienced by Judah.
2) Search your heart for idolatry and complacency.

We no longer fall prey to the worship of "false gods". However, we often replace God with reliance on others, reliance on traditions, and self-reliance.
