In the last of his series, "Take Back the Future" at http://www.fusionatl.org/p/12081/Default.aspx, Johnson Bowie opens again with a reminder that Jesus instructs us to pray, "May Your Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven". Reviewing from the previous weeks, he talks about how God is the God of this city seeking to see his will done. Secondly, the church is a training ground to send Christ followers out as an offensive force into the world. Thirdly, there are 21 million slaves in modern day with Atlanta ranked among the top hubs. Fourth, be the guy who changes the guy who changes the guy. Be faithful in the little things to change the world. So, to put the cap on this series, Jesus says don't just be a hearer of the Word; be a doer of the Word. There are three types of people; those who watch history, those who study history and those who MAKE history. How do we make history? We follow God. We are obedient to the things that God puts on our hearts. We have to know first what God has for us and then we resolve that to be our MISSION here. Sadly, the modern church seems to think that we can change the world by showing up to church and reading the Bible. But God's call on our life is so much bigger!! We are called to be devoted to the Word. How glad are we that Jesus came and didn't tell us just to read the Word? He came to set the captives free, he had a mission and a reason to get out of bed! We have to have passion. Johnson has a couple of quotes by two guys that changed the world; "The doom of a nation can be a burden only by a storm of flowing passion, but only those who are passionate themselves can arouse passion in others." Secondly, "You cannot make a revolution with silk gloves." These are amazing quotes, but the problem is that the first one is from Hitler and the second one is from Stalin! Why is it that the people who are truly passionate are usually passionate about bad things? Have you ever noticed that? It's like those who don't believe in the Bible are so much more passionate than most of us are. God is looking for passionate people. Johnson's greatest passion is to train up people to go out into the world to make a difference. But in order to gain passion, we have to pursue Him through the Word, through prayer and through serving. God has perfectly matched up our talents and our abilities with what he's called us to do in this world. But so often, it's not on our hearts to follow through because the costs are too high. In James 4:17, it says, "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin." There's two types of sin, which is implied in this verse, theres commission and omission. It, in other words, is a sin to do bad things and it's a sin to NOT do good things. Why do we ignore the call of God on our lives?!? What would have happened if the people of Israel refused to get up and follow the cloud and column of fire God was leading them by? God is always moving. All we have to do is follow. There's an old saying, "All that it takes for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing." C.S. Lewis once said, "The rule for all of us is fairly simple, do not waste time bothering whether or not you love your neighbor, act as if you did." The man who ponders alone is doing nothing. Make the decision to be obedient. Stop critiquing culture, but create it!! John Leanard Dober and Dave Neechman, both had a passion for the Great Commission. Both of them decided to give up their lives to Christ. In 1732, seeing that there was a need to minister to slaves, they sold themselves into slavery from Europe and were sent to the Carribean. When they got there, the white owner wouldn't allow them to be slaves, so they started a wave of missionaries who came to Carribean Islands. There's another man named Conrad Heart, whose son attends Victory Church, and who has a passion that no child should drop out of school and turn to a life of crime. Three other guys from Southern California went to Sudan with a video camera. They found a mass of children in a place called Noah's Ark who were fleeing from the military recruiting regimes. Then the two guys went to different college campuses raising awareness. The verse in Eccl 4:1 says, "So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter." There are a billion people who do not have fresh water. There are 115,000 abortions today. 3 billion people live on less than $2 a day. There are 27 million people in slavery. A friend of Johnson's is trying to get him to come down to see some of the children on the streets in Lima Peru. He tells a horrific story about how a little girl named Veronica was trying to sell candy on the streets to pay her way through grade school. Some people she met tricked her and forced her into prostitution. Years later, the missionary team met this young girl, but didn't immediately have a place for her. But days later, Veronica was found dead in a hotel room. She'd been strangled by a John. There are needs all over this planet!! It's not hard to find where God's heart can be extended. To counter the horrible story of Veronica, Johnson then plays a video that we can't see, but it is sure to be showing the successes of the missionaries who touch the lives of others. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is heard with a Ukele over the sound system. I really wish I could see this on video, because I was moved just be the song. Mother Theresa once said that every time we smile at someone, it is an action of love; a gift to that person. There is something so simple, but incredible about a smile. Sharing what some of the people at Fusion are doing, Johnson talks about how groups of people went down just to hug people on the streets of Atlanta. They were kicked out of a couple of places, but ended up at Centennial Park, just hugging. One of the group members had an aunt who had a coma and was expected to die. The groups prayed and her aunt woke up and went home the next day! The Davis's go downtown between 2am and 4am to share with people. Kiwana's group is a group that focuses on discipling young girls into Godly woman. Chad's group focuses on turning boys into Godly men. For the single woman out there who wants a Godly husband, you need to pray about Chad's group! The Robertsons align themselves with couples to help strengthen marriages. Another group reaches out to the Muslims and other faiths. Another group focuses on how to talk to others about Christ. Another group focuses on researching and reducing the slave labor in Georgia. There are 10 Fusion Groups that focus on these things. Find your purpose and God's passion!
