Ouch!!!
Matthew 7:1-5 ASV and 1 Corinthians 5:11-13 ASV
I have heard said (and said myself) at times..."It isn't their place (meaning people in the church) to judge me. Who do they think they are? Who gave them this authority to judge me in this way?" Well...it looks like we (the church) have that authority from scripture (1 Cor. 5: 11-13).I do believe that we (the church) must take into account Matt. 7:1-5 before we point too many fingers at our brothers and sisters. To me, this creates a "you better check yourself" situation. This does not mean that we are to let our brothers and sisters continue in sin even if we need to straighten some things out ourselves. I feel that it is up to us to call one another out when we see each other going astray, while remaining obedient to the "check yourself" passage of Matthew 7. When we look at ourselves first, we can see all sorts of nasty things that we need to take care of. With this said, I believe we have the go ahead (if need be) to check our brothers and sisters that are in sin. If we didn't, wouldn't we be disobedient to Paul's command?
I realize after the fact that I should have listened to my brothers and sisters that checked me, or called me out on things in the past; when I instead took the attitude of "Just who do they think they are." They were trying to help, and I couldn't see it. Maybe we should pay more attention to what is being communicated (which should be admonishment in love), rather than seeing it as some sort of authoritative control. Besides, don't we all fall short of God's glory?
When we are too close to sinful situation, we don't always see it clearly; whereas someone on the outside (our brothers and sisters in Christ) can see it. So...when you see a brother in sin...help a brother out next time. Tell them...Paul told you so.
