Pressing on
This is an important passage for me personally. Here, Paul talks about the need to continue to "press on" toward our "prize" which is the crown we will receive in heaven. I'm convinced that Satan knows he has lost the battle with us, but he still has the ability to trip us up as we race toward the prize. He has the ability to knock us off course, get us feeling guilty, distract us with earthly things, and keep us busy with things that that have no value to God. In doing this, he often succeeds in stopping us from doing what God wants and needs us to do here on earth. Like the actions of a great athlete, Paul reminds us to put the past behind and press on. Forget about the last failure and move on. God, through Jesus, has already forgiven us so we need to just get up and keep moving. God still needs us to acomplish great things though us.
This passage makes me think of the Relient K song - Pressing On - "I'm pressing on.
Pressing on, all my distress is going, going, gone. I won't sit back, and take this anymore.
'Cause I'm done with that, I've got one foot out the door. And to go back where I was would just be wrong. I'm pressing on."
