We have a Choice
Thought I have heard others say that God chooses who will be saved, I don't believe that to be true. If you read this verse in its fullness, I still believe that God offers the gift of salvation to ALL, but only a few will choose it. I really believe that is what this is saying, which makes perfect sense.
No one walks around wearing wedding clothes. It doesn't matter which society or culture you live in. It takes time and preparation to to go to a wedding. This is why Jesus cast him out at the end of the story, cause this person didn't prepare them selves for the relationship, they just showed up. Anybody who thinks they can just show up to heaven, and not establish a relationship with God before, on this earth, and still get into heaven, is mislead.
