What a passage! Jesus lays down the smack on the scribes and Pharisees. He calls them out for exactly what they are. Here's a listing of the indictments:
* They don't practice what they preach.
* They tie heavy burdens on people that they themselves can't bear.
* They do their deeds to be seen and exalted by men.
* They seek honor.
* They shut the Kingdom in people's faces.
* They travel far for the sake of proselytizing, but end up creating more hypocrites like themselves.
* They are blind guides.
* They confuse things that are sacred for the thing which made them sacred.
* They give the expensive things, but forget the foundation of sacrifice that God desires; justice, mercy, faithfulness.
* They clean the outer appearance while leaving their insides filthy and wicked.
* They're whitewashed tombs.
* They honor the prophets of old, but persecute their contemporary prophets.

Then, Jesus leaves Jerusalem until they get their act together.
