Jeremiah has just prophesied (ch 27) that God will deliver all of Israel into the hands of the Babylonians. Now Hananiah comes and says that God will break Nebuchadnezzar in two years and that the people will be free. He says that God will return Jehoiakim king of Judah and all the other exiles back to Judah.

Jeremiah says that he hopes the prophecies hold true, but warns that all the other prophets before have prophesied war and disaster and he says that the prophet who says peace is coming will only be recognized if it comes true.

Later, the Lord came to Jeremiah (V. 12...) and said to tell Hananiah: You have broken a wooden yoke, but in its place you will get a yoke of iron..."

Jeremiah went to Hananiah and said, "...the Lord has not sent you, yet you have persuaded this nation to trust lies." He said that the Lord would "remove" him from the face of the earth. "This very year you are going to die, because you have preached rebellion against the Lord." In the 7th month of the same year, Hananiah died.

1. Even if someone fools people, he cannot fool God
2. God punishes those who lead rebellion against him
