Mark 8:1 ASV

A crowd of 4000 was following Jesus for 3 days. They had nothing to eat and had become famished. Jesus disciples had 7 loaves of bread. Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to His disciples to set before the people. Jesus also gave thanks for a few small fish, which He also had His disciples pass out. Everyone ate and was satisfied. After the meal, the disciples gathered 7 baskets of left over bread. Jesus and His disciples got into a boat and went to Dalmanutha. When the Pharisees approached Him and began to question Him, Jesus told them He would give them no sign and then He got back in the boat and crossed to the other side. |||

The disciples were disheartened because they had only one loaf of bread in the boat. Jesus got on to them saying, "Do you still not see or understand?...do you have eyes but fail to see?...When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?" |||

Jesus asked His disciples who people said He was. They said John the Baptist, Elijah, or a prophet. Jesus asked His disciples who they thought He was. Peter answered, "You are the Christ." Then Jesus told them not to tell anyone who He was. |||

Jesus told them that the Son of Man must suffer and be rejected, and that He must be killed and raised three days later. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. Jesus then rebuked Peter, telling him that he was thinking about himself and not of the things of God. He then spoke to His disciples and the crowd that had gathered, telling them that in order to follow Him, they must deny themselves, take up their cross (this was before anyone knew Jesus would die on a cross) and follow Him. Jesus says that if anyone is ashamed of Him or the things He says, then He will in turn be ashamed of them in front of His Father. |||
