Mark 11
As they approached Jerusalem, Jesus sent two of His disciples into a village to get a colt which no one had ever rode. They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and He sat on it. Many cloaks were spread on the road as well as branches. The people shouted, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" The people continued to shout. Jesus went into the temple in Jerusalem, but it was late, and He returned with His disciples to Bethany. |||
When He and His disciples were leaving Bethany the next morning, Jesus was hungry and went to a near-by fig tree. It was not the season for figs, so the tree had only leaves. Jesus said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." His disciples head Him.
Jesus went to the temple in Jerusalem and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned tables and benches, not allowing anything to be sold there. Jesus said that the house of the Lord was to be "a house of prayer for all nations." But they had made it "a den of robbers." The chief priests heard this, and they planned to kill Him because He had great sway on the people and they feared Him. |||
The next morning, the disciples saw the fig tree that Jesus had cursed had withered. Jesus told them to have faith and believe that God will move and act, and if they believed, then nothing was impossible. He also told them to forgive anyone that they held anything against so that their Father may also forgive them. |||
Jesus was walking in the temple courts and the chief priests asked Him "By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you authority to do this?" Jesus said if they answer one question, He would answer them. Jesus asked them where John's baptism was from. They thought and discussed it. They knew if they said it was from heaven, then Jesus would ask them why they didn't believe him, but they were afraid to say that it was from men, because they knew that the people thought of John as a prophet of God. They said to Jesus, "We don't know," and Jesus told them that He would not answer their question about His authority. |||
1. Jesus fulfills the prophesy about the triumphal entry.
2. Jesus cursed (and thereby condemned) a fig tree for not bearing fruit.
3. Jesus drove people out of the temple for using it as something other than a house of prayer and worship
4. Jesus questioned about His authority, asks about the authority of people before Him
