In the Midst of Turmoil
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
- Ephesians 6:1
Counter example: Parents who are drug addicts or abusive. Is it possible to continue to obey your parents under this circumstance? This was the counter example I used to show that it was not always possible to follow this verse.
I’m sure this is justified. It can be justified. God knows your heart. He knows your burden. Living under such a conflict. Sometimes it gets so difficult and so painful you just have to tell yourself not all parents are benevolent. It hurts too much keeping obedience. And God would understand if you couldn’t go on.
At that moment when Jesus cried out to God on Gethsemane. Jesus knew he had to suffer an unjust punishment. God understood His son’s pain and burden. God could have easily taken away his cup. But He didn’t. It was an act of faith.
God wants us to go on. Even when it is painful. Especially when it is most painful. It hurts Him as much as it hurts us. Our faith is built on how much we obey through the pain. When I’m hurt I want to be justified. I want my vindication. I want it all to change my way. But my encouragement is this; do what is right even in the midst of turmoil and injustice and be faithful that God is being faithful.
