I remember a couple of times when I've walked into an event I've been invited to, looked around at who else is there, and wondered to myself, "what are THEY doing here?" What I was really doing was judging them and thinking that they didn't "fit" or belong where I was. Frankly, I thought I was better then them....or at least I hoped so. It's a bit uncomfortable to be reminded that I'm not that different then the Pharisees were. The main difference here is that all the "sinners" were actually finding Jesus on their own....they weren't invited, but they were welcomed. They wanted to be with Jesus. The Pharisees on the other hand, were put off by the crowd Jesus attracted and DIDN'T want to be with Jesus. They looked at who was there and thought to themselves "what are THEY doing here?" Next time you catch yourself doing that, maybe the next question you need to ask yourself is "what am I doing here?"
