"they were not a little comforted"
This is an old English idiom that is easy to misunderstand. It means they were greatly comforted! Paul had the gift of comfort and encouragement. But how did he get it? The hard way.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Cor 1:3-4
God is "the God of all comfort" and He comforts us in ALL our tribulation. Paul had been through some rough stuff and having experienced God's comfort, he can now comfort others.
What is the primary way God comforts us? He will remind us of His word, His promises and His faithfulness in our trials and tribulations.
What is the primary way we can comfort others? We can share God's word, God's promises and God's faithfulness in our trials and tribulations.
So when you are going through the rough stuff, know the Lord is preparing you to be an instrument of His love.
