Rom 5:1-21 The Hardest Part of being Saved
Ever had that God-might-be-saving-everyone-else-but-I-don’t-know-about-me feeling?
Maybe we need to change viewpoints says Paul.
He invites us to see the crucifixion from heaven’s perspective. To view the emotional pain & drama that a Heavenly Father felt looking down on that scene.
The outcome may surprise.
At odds with human reaction the Father’s response is to look at us on THAT night with all its ugliness and say ‘I forgive you’ V9 ‘I am taking you back’ V10. Certainly not a human response!
Paul suggests we imagine then God’s emotional reaction in 3 days time when He sees His only Son come up out of that grave? Paul exclaims God is just going to be so excited that it is like he wants to virtually drag everyone of us right there and then into His promised future! “MUCH MORE…saved by his life” V10 KJV.
What are my chances of success then?
Hey it is not about you. The risk was all God’s. He was the one who went out on a limb and put his “love on the line” V8 (Message) when we were in no frame of mind at all to respond. Secondly and in terms of our question: the hardest part of getting you & me saved has already been done. That hardest part was what the Father went through on the day they killed His beloved Son. My contributions or lack thereof just don't rate against the drama of that. The heaven turned black that day 'cause God was hurting.
Thirdly, the odds, says Paul in V14-21 are now firmly stacked in our favour. Using his “MUCH MORE” theme (V9, 10, 15 KJV) he creates a comparison by contrast between Adam as the Old Team Leader and Jesus as the new. Ok suggests Paul, trot out all the disadvantages in being born under Adam – give me a list - mortality, sickness, a nature that finds selfishness all too easy, working hard for barely-there wages, difficulties in bearing and rearing children, sin’s ingrained habits, short life spans…Right says Paul and this has not just been thrown into reverse gear by Jesus Christ but “MUCH MORE” than reversed i.e. the advantages of the New Team Leader are “out of all proportion”V15 NEB to the Old. So go back to your tough employment, have children and there will be pain, live out your 70 years with or without good health but this time around you are creating families for eternity, lives that count and relationships that are forever.
Law could never achieve outcomes like that.
