Barabbas
Barabbas
When Pilate asked the people who they wanted to release, they screamed Barabbas. The name Barabbas comes from the Hebrew separation of "Bar" (son) and "Abba" (father). When put together, they mean "the son of the father."
The people were so jealous of Christ's deity and so emphatic about how close he claimed to be with the Father that even in their own Hebrew tradition they did not realize the irony of God. They did not see they when they asked to set Barabbas free they were actually asking to set "the son of the father" free.
They wanted Christ to be last in the Kingdom and act the angry crowd to Crucify Him.
Now, don't get me wrong, Christ was meant to die for us. The Father said so and Christ even asked if there was another way, but the people were hardened to the fact that a selfish and yet selfless God would send His Son to die for them even in the midst of their horrific outrage.
