Confidence is self, in the flesh.
Some of Jesus disciples were fishermen and fishing and sailing were there areas of expertise. When Jesus called them to follow him, it was after a night of unsuccessful fishing, the one thing they were experts in. Despite all there experience, skill and knowledge they came up empty handed.
Here again Jesus is teaching us not to have confidence is our flesh, the things we believe we can do. No doubt, the disciples tried all the tricks of the trade and when it still looked they were going to perish they finally turned to Jesus for help.
Often we turn to God as a last ditch effort when we find ourselves in a predicament. Rather we should start in prayer and be led by His word so we can have confidence that what He said He will do.
“Let us cross over to the other side.” All the disciples needed to hold on to is Jesus’ word. What God says he will do or bring to pass.
Is there an area of your life in which you are trusting in your abilities and in your expertise to accomplish something? God can’t really begin to work through us until we learn to stop relying on self and start trusting in Him.
