Paul has been saying that a church is not programs or buidings, they are people and people are messy; therefore churches are messy. Church are people=Messy. That's what we've been learning. All people come in with messy baggage. 1 Cor. is a messy church. Paul is trying to clarify issues. 1: Paul is leader. 2: 2 types of people (Christians and Non Christians) Christians love Jesus and are filled with Holy Spirit. NC don't love jesus.
First question: Do you love Jesus?

Are you a Christian, who loves Jesus, pray, read, for Jesus. This is not just being a religous person. Christianity is not just a bottom religon. Paul was a very reliogous and more guy, and he didn't know Jesus. Jesus beat him up and opened his eyes. Some of you think that you are good people, but we are not talking about that. We are talking about you and Jesus...Clear agenda... Two kinds of Christians (paul talks about today) (Lordship salvation)..not talking about relgion, morality- you and Jesus!
Text is hotly debated.
This text seems to teach that there are two kinds of Christians: not true.
Some teach that there are 3 kinds of people by using circles. Campus Crusade for Christ...

Carnal Christian: Is it possible for you to be a Christian and Jesus not being on the throne of your life (Hank, are you done being king yet?) Bible says Jesus is on the throne.

First Question: Are these people Christians? Yes

2nd Question: Are they Christians who lost their salvation? No, salvation belongs to the Lord (Jonah) Is Jesus our or are we Jesus? Jesus don't lose Christians. PHilippians. I don’t own Jesus, Jesus owns me. Can a Christian lose Jesus or Can Jesus lose a Christian?

Family "Brothers" They are Christians, family with God as the father. 1:26; 1:2; 1:5-14 they are Christians….

How do we know they are Christians? The Bible says so...Maybe they are not Christians…”Christians don’t sin.” Christians do sin...1 John (not sinner = liar). Nobody is Jesus. Nobody is perfect.

They c have sin in their lives, but they are still Christians.

They are stubbern (put emergancy break, moving slowly toward Jesus). Some move fast, others fight with go. They are still moving, but slowly.

3rd QuestionL Can Jesus Be Savior but not Lord? No.
He saves us from old life, but Lord over new life.
Example....man continuing to sin repeatedly, but not repent and confess sin. He said that Jesus was his “Savior but not Lord.” No. Jesus Saves us by death, and we have new life. so dramatic, that some in bible got new name. will jesus let you do whatever the hell you want as god and clean up your messes like a janitor? (lk. 2:11; 1pet.1-11) You can't bifurcate those two. Ex. I tell my kids that I’m their father and not their daddy. 2 pet. 3:18 = Savior and Lord. Rescues you frolm Satran, sin and death, and becomes lord of your new life. Being born again is starting over. You don’t have to listen to me, you be your own god…no it don’t work that way.

a christian knows and loves this, even when it is painful, and he is glad. Jesus is smarter and better than all of us. Deep down they may fight, but enevitabley they obey Jesus!

Are they Christians? Yes. Are they carnal Christians? NO

4th Question: Is it possible for a Christians to live a life without any change (way of thinking, actsions, behaviors)? No, You can't meet Jesus and not change...It is a process, but you do change..If you are not changing, you not a christian.. Just praying a prayer, going to an altar, filling out a card, that does not make you a chirstians…

A relationship with Jesus and walking with him forever produces change, and that is what makes you a Christian.

1:7; 12:13- they are growing and have the HS, even though they have their feet down… They are Christians who are still actively involved in their church (14) and are actively debating over theological issues - so they are growing.

Are they Carnal? Stubborn, yes -Unrepented and never changing? NO (Jesus savior and not lord – no) (Jesus forgave and they are unchanged but still Christian – no..I don’t believe in that kind of Christian. When jesus saves you – you change.

1 Corinthians 3
On Divisions in the Church
1 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly–mere infants in Christ.
You all a bunch of bables: this is why paul gets beat up alot. he calls dudes babies.

Vrs 2:
These people are immature. Is it a sin to act like a baby? Not if you are a baby.
Ex. Jeremy is a baby...eat sleep, poop, and yell. Wife runs and lifts up shirt. He has this think figured out.

If at 25 Jeremy is still doing that, I will beat him! It's cut when you are a baby, but not when you are 25. Immaturity is this: eveything is about me. They feed me, they give to me, they do for me. Its my emergancy that counts. Maturity is thinking outward: giving, praying, serving, looking for places to help.

1. How have you experienced God maturing you as a Christinn? Have things changed, and what? You have grown, though slow, but we are going. Aknowlege and celebrate those little victories that God has done, and in faith trust that he will continue to grow us. this leads to more faith and encouragement for futher

2. what areas of life are spiritually immature? Are you on cops. Sin is secrect: That's my "personality" Some are strong and weak, mature and immature. Where are we? We let are maturities shadow and hide our immaturity. ex. Money, sex, food, drugs... Professional Hypocrite to justify immaturity bc of matury. Or I’m more mature than him or her…What are areas for me…

3. At what point do you expect to become mature? Sense of urgency? Paul is saying, "enough already" you are still not potty trained and it is time to grow up, give serve, get involved. Stop messing yourself in the 3 grade!

False notion that old eqauls wise... Dumb and old. you can be 80 and never learn a thing. you can be 20 and mature and the difference is on uses the life experiences and one don't. Biblical maturity: LEARNING from life experiences….

Paul is writing to a young church….saying…

Maturity is not something that should be worked on tomorrow, but TODAY! usually, we only want to mature in crisis moments. Prudents perseus maturity before the meltdown happens. Some of you are horrible wifes and husbans, some of you it is friendships, work ethich, finances.

It is critical,, if it is causing your life not to move toward Jesus. It MUST be dealt with with a Sense of urgency...Lack of a sense of urgency (I’m 27 and I need to get on the ball!)...I need to mature in chirst so that I can effectly and better serve others. from sucking to giving.

verse 3: (Here, Paul begins to address reasons and ways they are falling into immaturity)
Non christians practice Jealously and quirreling. Single and jelousl of married people, or a womean with a good man. kids, no kids, old, young, male female, "she thingks she is all that." she is

immaturity with pop off when someone has it down. matuirty with learn from others... you got a good marrieage ours is bad, can you help. you read your bbible, and you help. you work hard, how.

Jealous and immature vs. humble and inquistitive

I serve your weakness and you serve mine. Essence of exampling the gospel.

5-8:
You might have favorite speaker, pastor, ex...Just cause its your thing don't mean its the only thing.
Style, not substance causes quarrling..Yeah, I did my part, applos did his part, but we would not be here without God.
verse 9a:
Metaphor God is a gardner: rake and shovel, despite gardner. change transformation. leads to shovelist and rakeist.

Not about paul..he is just a tool in the hand of Jesus...not a hoe, that's not a good one. Jesus uses us to pull weeds and plant seed and it is beautiful
Don't walk into a church saying, "Im all about the shovel…Im all about the music, style, service times; all about servie times, agendas, ex" Its about Jesus, not you.

Servants Bus boy (Rock star who wrote the bible, but he is just a bus boy) He got this from Jesus who came to give not receive: it is glorious to be in the hands of Jesus and his kingdom. you are all serving someone and giving to someone. Follow him and Jesus (example): Jesus have himself away, I give myself to you, now you give yourselves to eachother and this city!

Phil says that Paul finds profound sense of joy just being a shovel…doing his part…result is that he has joy. Yes it is hard, but he has joy…Jesus did is part for me…I am doing my part for you…now it is your turn to do your part for your city!

We are not in the bible belt. post christian canada comes in. We have a lot of weeds in our garden! LOTS! Paul says 'we don't have time to agrue and fit. We need to get busy building the kingdom of God.' We have a garden to get busy and work on. Paul says, stop being a baby and be a good shovel..That will make you have, because that is what you will built for. WE HAVE LOTS OF WORK TO DO IN OUR END OF THE GARDEN! LOTS. DON’T GET CAUGHT UP IN SECONDARY THINGS…BE A SHOVEL, DO YOUR PART IN THIS…

And this is where it begins….
Question: are you mature.
1. You need to be a Christian (confess or sins to Jesus). Are you about Jesus? Do you love Jesus? Begin with Jesus today.
2. Pick a church: growing in maturity is not a solo effort. Some may be visiting. Paul is writing to a church (group of people meeting together to talk about Jesus) Find a church that sin is the problem, Jesus is the answer, and the bible is the truth! If god would call you there, praise god, get connected and do your part their two.
If you want to call movement church home, good, we welcome you—this is how you do it…
We need you to be mobilized on mission: to do that, we will be having the gospel class: some are not yet Christians, you need to learn. Some are new Christians, and it would be good for you to know more. Some of you are mature Christians and you need to find out if you agree with us before you jump in and give your time, talent and treasure.. when you are done, we put plug you in to serve. some may say, "well i am an alcolhlic, we will help you. sex addict. we will help you. divorce, we will hlep you. first time parent. we can help. I am real theological, we will teach you greek and hebrew and we will plug you in.

We need you to exameine yourself...Am I a Christian? And I getting involved in areas of help that can get me.

It's not about 1 but all.

Together we acknowlge Jesus and work on his garden. Lets work well.

It started with my wife and I...Jesus gave his life. Paul gave his....we gave ours...My life is in this church. I am giving my whole life to you. I am not going anywhere...

This church is a source of tremendous joy for me. It is a wonderful investment to see immature become mature. Non Christians become Chrsitians. Were else are you going to give your life? What would you rather be doing than belonging to Jesus, being a shovel and planing a garden to see fruit (changed lives).

Are you mature or immature
if immature, do uyou have a sense of urgency. as we write history..

celebrate maturity

It's not about me. it is about Jesus and we are just a tool.
