Obviously, the leaders at the temple were not happy about JEsus trashing it the day before. So they ask who gave you the authority to do this? JEsus knew they only cared about their own power and didn't really care about God.
So JEsus turns the question around on them. He knew they didn't believe what John the baptist had said about Jesus. So he asked them about who John followed.
The teachers of the law didn't want to upset the crowd because if the crowd turned against them, they might lose their power and wealth. So they said they didn't know.
Jesus proved they cared more about power than about the truth.
