i noticed this morning that John the Baptist's statement - He must become greater; I must become less. - from John 3:30, seems to be about evangelism. I always looked at this as a statement about personal spiritual growth. And I'm sure pursuing that idea would assist your spiritual growth. But this morning, reading it in context, I see that it's about seeing people come to follow Jesus. And in what follows I see the why - Jesus is the only one who can really reveal God to people. I was praying this morning to be used in a powerful way to touch people's lives. I guess there's my answer - become less in a way that allows Jesus to become greater. Point people to him and not to you. Keep in mind that God's wrath is on people who haven't yet believed. I can help by pointing people to Jesus.
