James 4:13-16

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town* and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” 14 You* do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like?* For you are a puff of smoke* that appears for a short time and then vanishes. 15 You ought to say instead,* “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.” 16 But as it is,* you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

I find it all to easy to live my life as though I were in total control and could operate with total security. I've got my plans for what I'm doing next year, and the year after that. I've even sometimes held back from taking steps I felt God was calling me to, waiting for a time when it fits better with my family's needs. But, as has been demonstrated by the recent economic troubles (and an ample assortment of other man-made and natural catastrophes before that), that sense of security and control is an illusion and I am prideful and self-deceived to rest easy in it.

That's not to say that we should not plan ahead -- but we should hold our plans lightly, releasing them easily when He changes our circumstances. All the while seeking to live in his will moment-by-moment.
