Solomon spent 13 years building his own house. This text is not a sounding rebuke but a statement. The work of his own house was probably delayed due to the building of the temple. Many people misinterpret this for meaning that Solomon spent more time on his house than the temple, and translate as some type of disfavor, but this is not stated.

Any man whom dedicates his life to building a work for God will suffer personal delays. The building of his house will be delayed because he is diligent in tithes, the building of his own personal study will be delayed because of commitments to the ministry.
