You cannot serve both God and Money.
“…You cannot serve both God and Money.” “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.”
We tend to serve who/what provides for us and makes us feel secure. The truth is many of us find our security in money and believe it is what provides us just that. We tend to look at money as our provider. I believe that’s why it’s given the capital “M” in the NIV. When Jesus said, “You cannot serve both God and Money...” he immediately followed it by “Therefore…don’t worry…” You see, we can’t serve God while looking to money for security, because we will serve what we find security in. So, Jesus is saying (basically; realize this is me talking here with Scripture entwined), “Hey, don’t serve money. That’s why people are worried. Serve God – and therefore don’t worry. Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Because God is the provider. When you serve the living God you don’t have to worry, because He’s living and hears and sees and knows your needs. Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life. And trust me, if you serve Money you will worry – because money flops up and down. Stocks, the economy, and finances cause stress if that’s what you are trusting in, but when you trust in and serve God you don’t have to worry because He’s the Great Provider. He knows what you need and He’ll give it to you, just as you never see starving birds – He provides for them – He will provide for you.
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." - Mt. 6:33-34
